Questions & Answers about Resmî bir kurumdan aradılar sanıp panikledim, meğerse büyük bir yalanmış.
Why does the sentence use yalanmış instead of yalandı, and how does it relate to meğerse?
The word meğerse means "it turns out that" or "I just realized." Because it expresses a newly discovered fact or a surprise, it pairs perfectly with the -mIş suffix (the evidential past). You didn't know it was a lie at the time, so you use yalanmış to show this delayed realization.
What is the function of the -ıp ending on sanıp?
The -(y)ıp suffix is a linking ending that connects two actions done by the same person. Instead of making two separate sentences, sanıp links the action of "thinking" directly to the main action panikledim (I panicked). It automatically shares the past tense and the "I" subject of that main verb.
Why is aradılar a fully conjugated past tense verb here, right before sanıp?
In Turkish, verbs like sanmak (to suppose/assume) and demek (to say) often follow a full sentence that represents the thought or quote. Here, the thought is exactly Resmî bir kurumdan aradılar (They called from an official institution). You just place that complete thought right before sanıp.
Why is there a circumflex (a little hat) on the letter 'i' in Resmî?
