Imagine receiving a phone call from someone claiming to be the police. You panic, follow their instructions, and later realize it was all a trick! When you want to express a sudden realization or a shattered assumption, Turkish has the perfect discourse markers.
Meğer (It turns out)
Use meğer (apparently / it turns out) to introduce a fact you just discovered, usually one that contradicts what you previously believed. Because these sentences express a realization after the fact, the verb or adjective following meğer almost always takes the evidential/inferential -mIş suffix.
| I thought he was a police officer, it turns out he was a scammer. | Onu polis sanıyordum, meğer dolandırıcıymış. |
| I thought they called to verify my information, it turns out everything was fake. | Bilgilerimi doğrulamak için aradılar sandım, meğer her şey sahteymiş. |
Meğerse (As it turns out)
You can also use meğerse. It means exactly the same thing as meğer and the two are used interchangeably. The added "-se" just gives a slight rhythmic emphasis to your shocking discovery.
| I panicked thinking they called from an official institution, it turns out it was a big lie. | Resmî bir kurumdan aradılar sanıp panikledim, meğerse büyük bir yalanmış. |
| He was acting very politely to me, it turns out he was a dangerous fraudster. | Bana çok kibar davranıyordu, meğerse tehlikeli bir sahtekârmış. |
| I thought my computer broke down, it turns out there was a virus. | Bilgisayarım bozuldu sanıyordum, meğerse virüs varmış. |
Dodging the Scam
When discussing fraudsters and their tricks, you'll often need strong verbs to describe what happened—whether it's dialing a suspicious number, losing money, or finally uncovering the truth. You can combine these with your discovery markers to warn your friends about the ordeal.
| When I went to the bank I understood, it turns out I had lost my money to a scammer. | Bankaya gidince anladım, meğer paramı bir dolandırıcıya kaptırmışım. |
| It turns out that man was not a police officer, but a scammer. | Meğerse o adam polis değil, bir dolandırıcıymış. |
