Questions & Answers about Nemlendirici sürmek için aynaya bakmalarına gerek yok.
How exactly does bakmalarına break down in this grammar structure?
It breaks down as bak (look) + ma (verbal noun) + ları (their) + n (buffer) + a (dative). The phrase gerek yok translates literally as 'there is no need TO something', which is why it requires the dative ending (-a or -e) on the action.
Doesn't sürmek mean to drive?
Yes, but it is also the standard verb for applying creams, lotions, makeup, or ointments. Here, nemlendirici sürmek means to apply moisturizer.
Why is mirror (ayna) written as aynaya?
The verb bakmak (to look) always directs action toward a target, so it requires the dative case (-a or -e). In Turkish, you look to the mirror.
Why do we use the full infinitive sürmek but the short verbal noun bakma?
The word için (meaning 'in order to') just needs the standard dictionary infinitive (-mAk). But gerek yok needs to specify whose need it is, requiring a possessive ending. Because the -mAk infinitive cannot take possessive endings, we must swap it for the short -mA verbal noun so we can attach -ları (their).
