Lack of necessity (-maya gerek yok)

In English, we say "you don't need to do that." In Turkish, this is expressed using gerek yok (there is no need) combined with a verbal noun.

The Formula for Lack of Necessity

To link an action to gerek yok, turn the verb into a noun and add a possessive suffix to show who doesn't need to perform the action.

Verb Stem + -ma / -me + Possessive Suffix + -a / -e (Dative) + gerek yok

For example, with the verb yapmak (to do) for "you" (singular):

  • Verb stem: yap-
  • Verbal noun + possessive: yapman (your doing)
  • Add dative: yapmana (to your doing)
  • Add the phrase: yapmana gerek yok (you don't need to do it)
Your skin is very beautiful, you don't need to put on a lot of makeup.
Cildin çok güzel, çok makyaj yapmana gerek yok.

For "he," "she," or "it," the possessive suffix is -sı / -si. Add the buffer letter -n- before the dative suffix, making it -masına / -mesine.

She doesn't need to buy expensive creams for skin care.
Cilt bakımı için pahalı kremler almasına gerek yok.

Other Subjects

Adapt this structure for other subjects by swapping out the possessive suffix:

  • Onlar (they): Verb + -malarına / -melerine
  • Biz (we): Verb + -mamıza / -memize
  • Siz (you, plural/formal): Verb + -manıza / -menize
They don't need to look in the mirror to apply moisturizer.
Nemlendirici sürmek için aynaya bakmalarına gerek yok.
We are at home today, we don't need to spray perfume.
Bugün evdeyiz, parfüm sıkmamıza gerek yok.
The meeting is over, you don't need to wear lipstick anymore.
Toplantı bitti, artık ruj sürmenize gerek yok.

More Practice

This structure works exactly the same way across all verbs and contexts. Here are a few more examples:

There is no nail polish on your nails, you don't need to use nail polish remover.
Tırnaklarında oje yok, aseton kullanmana gerek yok.
Your hair is already straight, you don't need to use a comb.
Saçların zaten düz, tarak kullanmana gerek yok.
You are not tired, you don't need to get a massage.
Yorgun değilsin, masaj yaptırmana gerek yok.
