Questions & Answers about Vi hoppas att publiken kommer att skratta.
Why do we use kommer att here instead of ska?
We use kommer att because we are making a prediction about something outside of our control. We can't force the audience to laugh! If we used ska, it would sound like we have a firm plan or are somehow commanding them to do it.
Why does the verb hoppas end in an 's'? Is it passive?
It looks passive, but it has an active meaning. hoppas belongs to a special group of Swedish verbs (called deponent verbs) that always end in '-s' but act like normal, active verbs. It simply means 'hope'.
Why is the word att used twice in this sentence?
It is doing two different jobs! The first att is the connecting word 'that' (We hope that...). The second att is a fixed part of the future phrase kommer att, which translates together as 'will'.
Why is the final verb skratta and not skrattar?
Because it follows kommer att. Just like in English where we say 'will laugh' instead of 'will laughs', in Swedish you must always use the bare infinitive form (the basic dictionary form without the present tense '-r') after kommer att.
