Questions & Answers about La duración del examen no cambiará, a menos que sea una emergencia.
Does cambiará just mean the school is predicting the future, or is it a command?
In administrative and regulatory contexts like this, the simple future tense (cambiará) is used to state firm rules or policies. It acts as an objective command, similar to how we use 'shall' in formal English (e.g., 'The duration shall not change'). It sounds more professional and binding than a direct imperative command.
Why is sea in the subjunctive here instead of the indicative es?
The phrase a menos que (unless) is a strict trigger that always requires the subjunctive mood (sea). This is because it introduces a condition that is an exception to the rule and is viewed as a hypothetical possibility rather than a declared fact.
Since this is a formal rule, is there another way to say 'unless' besides a menos que?
Yes, you will often see salvo que in formal or administrative contexts. It means the exact same thing as a menos que and also strictly requires the subjunctive: salvo que sea una emergencia.
Why doesn't the word examen have an accent mark on the 'a'?
Words ending in 'n', 's', or a vowel naturally stress the second-to-last syllable. The spoken stress in examen falls naturally on the 'a' (ex-A-men), so no written accent is needed. However, the plural form adds a syllable (exámenes), which requires a written accent to keep the stress on the 'a'. This is a very common spelling trap for learners!
