Questions & Answers about Hierve el eucalipto y romperás a sudar con el vapor.
How does the command hierve work with y to make a conditional sentence?
This is a conversational shortcut. Instead of using a standard conditional clause like Si hierves el eucalipto... (If you boil the eucalyptus...), you can give a command (Hierve) followed by y to express cause and effect. It translates perfectly to the English structure 'Do this, and that will happen.'
Could we use the present tense for the result instead of the future tense (romperás)?
Yes! In this colloquial structure, the result can be in either the future or the present indicative. You could say Hierve el eucalipto y rompes a sudar, which gives a slightly more immediate or guaranteed feel, much like saying 'Boil it, and you break out in a sweat right away.'
What exactly does the formula romper a + infinitive do in romperás a sudar?
The phrase romper a followed by an infinitive is a common structure used to describe an action that starts suddenly or abruptly. While it translates here to 'break out in', you will also frequently hear it with crying (romper a llorar) or raining (romper a llover).
I know the verb is hervir, so why is the command form hierve instead of 'herve'?
