Romper means "to break." It follows the regular -er pattern in every simple tense, but its past participle is roto rather than the expected rompido. Like other irregular participles, roto shows up in every compound form — he roto, había roto — and also as an adjective: el vaso está roto.

Common Uses

Romper is used for physical breaking, for violating agreements, and — with the reflexive romperse — for things that break on their own. Romper con alguien means to break up with someone.

Se me rompió el celular.

My phone broke (on me).

Rompieron hace dos meses.

They broke up two months ago.

The expression romper a + infinitive means "to suddenly start doing something," often with emotion: rompió a llorar ("she burst into tears"), rompió a reír ("he burst out laughing").
