Reír: Full Conjugation | Spanish (Latin America) Grammar

Reír means "to laugh." It is a short but tricky -ir verb with an e→i stem change. Because the stem is reduced to just r-, many forms require a written accent to break the hiatus between vowels and keep the stress on the correct syllable. Its reflexive cousin reírse is more common in conversation: me río de todo.

He who laughs last, laughs best.

Use the reflexive reírse de to mean "to laugh at" someone or something: Se rieron de mi acento. Without the de, reír simply describes the act of laughing.

Sonreír (to smile) follows exactly the same pattern. If you can conjugate reír, you can conjugate sonreír.
