Why is recientemente placed at the very end of the sentence?
Adverbs of time like recientemente (recently) are quite flexible, but they usually go at the end or the beginning of a sentence. Placing it at the end is a very natural way to state when the action happened. You could also say Recientemente fuimos al festival de cine.
I thought fuimos meant we were. Why does it mean we went here?
The verbs ser (to be) and ir (to go) share the exact same forms in the preterite past tense. You can easily tell this is ir (we went) because it is followed by the direction word a (to), showing movement toward a destination.
Why do we use al instead of a el?
al is a mandatory contraction. Whenever the preposition a (to) is followed immediately by the masculine article el (the), they must combine into al. This just makes the words flow better when speaking.
Why is it festival de cine instead of cine festival?
In English, we often put a noun in front of another noun to describe it, like film festival. Spanish does not do this. Instead, you use de (of) to connect the two nouns, literally saying festival of film.
