В октябре никто не едет на море, поэтому мы отдыхаем в городе.

From Lesson 101:In a month (в)·Russian

Questions & Answers about В октябре никто не едет на море, поэтому мы отдыхаем в городе.

Why does the sentence say В октябре instead of just октябрь?
To say "in a certain month", Russian uses the preposition в plus the Prepositional case. Since октябрь (October) is a masculine noun ending in a soft sign, it changes to end in -е, giving us в октябре.
Why is there a не after никто? Doesn't никто already mean "nobody"?
Yes, but Russian uses double negatives! When you use a negative word like никто (nobody) or никогда (never), you must also put не right before the verb. So "nobody goes" is literally "nobody not goes" (никто не едет).
Why use едет for "goes" instead of идёт?
Едет is used for trips that require a vehicle (like a car, train, or plane). Unless you live right on the beach, going to the sea requires transportation, so Russian uses the "by transport" verb of motion ехать rather than the "on foot" verb идти.
Why do we say на море instead of в море for "to the sea"?
When traveling to shores, islands, or open spaces, Russian typically uses the preposition на. If you said в море, it would sound like you are diving into the water or sailing out on a ship! Since it is the destination of your trip, море is in the Accusative case (which looks the same as its dictionary form here).
Are в октябре and в городе using the same grammar rule?
Yes! Both use в plus the Prepositional case. В октябре tells us when something happens, and в городе tells us where it happens. For most masculine nouns like город, you simply add -е to form the Prepositional case.
