In a Month

To state that an event happens in a specific month, use the preposition в followed by the month in the prepositional case.

All twelve Russian months take the ending -е in the prepositional case. For months ending in a hard consonant (like март and август), add -е. For months ending in a soft sign (-ь) or -й, replace the final letter with -е (январь → в январе, май → в мае).

In January the holidays begin, and we do not work.
В январе начинаются каникулы, и мы не работаем.
In February we book tickets in advance.
В феврале мы заранее бронируем билеты.
We usually book the hotel in advance, in March.
Мы обычно бронируем отель заранее, в марте.

Summer Travel

Notice how the summer months change their endings after в.

Our holidays begin in June, and we go to the dacha.
Наши каникулы начинаются в июне, и мы едем на дачу.
In July it is hot, so we go to rest in the north.
В июле жарко, поэтому мы едем отдыхать на север.
In August we are not going anywhere, because tickets are very expensive.
В августе мы никуда не едем, потому что билеты очень дорогие.

Here is how to talk about flights (рейс) and journeys (путешествие) in the autumn.

In October this flight is often late.
В октябре этот рейс часто опаздывает.
In November the weather is bad, so nobody wants to go on vacation.
В ноябре плохая погода, поэтому никто не хочет ехать в отпуск.

Preparing and Celebrating

Use the verbs готовиться (to prepare) and праздновать (to celebrate) for winter events like Christmas (Рождество).

Do you always celebrate Christmas in December?
Вы всегда празднуете Рождество в декабре?
In December we prepare to celebrate Christmas.
В декабре мы готовимся праздновать Рождество.
