Question 1

How does using aș zice change the tone compared to just saying cred că or zic că?

Accepted Answer

It softens your assertion. Using the present conditional (aș zice) is a polite distancing strategy. Instead of bluntly stating your opinion as a fact, you present it as a tentative thought. This is very common in professional or polite contexts to mitigate a statement and avoid sounding confrontational.

Question 2

Could I use aș spune instead of aș zice here?

Accepted Answer

Yes, absolutely. Aș spune că means the exact same thing and serves the same softening function. The verb a zice is generally slightly more colloquial than a spune, but in this specific conditional phrase, both are widely used in everyday and professional speech.

Question 3

Is there a difference between această abordare and abordarea aceasta?

Accepted Answer

They mean the same thing, but their tone and grammar differ slightly. Placing the demonstrative before the noun (această abordare) sounds a bit more formal or analytical. Remember as a quick refresher that when the demonstrative comes before the noun, the noun drops its definite article (it is abordare, not abordarea).

Question 4

I see that abordare means an approach. Is this related to a verb?

Accepted Answer

Yes, it comes directly from the verb a aborda (to approach or to tackle). Abordare is the long infinitive form of the verb. In Romanian, you can turn almost any verb into a feminine noun by adding -re to its infinitive, which represents the action or the result of doing that verb.
