Why does the verb pôr change so drastically to ponho here?
The verb pôr has a circumflex accent on the 'o'. Why doesn't ponho have one?
The infinitive pôr needs the accent to show it is a verb, separating it from the completely different preposition por (by/for). However, conjugated forms like ponho do not need the accent because there are no other identical words to confuse them with, and your natural voice stress already falls on the correct syllable.
Why is it no vaso instead of em o vaso?
In Portuguese, the preposition em (in/on/at) must combine with the word that follows it if it is a definite article like o (the). So, em + o merges into no. If you were putting the plant on a table (a mesa), it would become na mesa.
Could I leave out the word Eu and just say Ponho a planta no vaso?
