Questions & Answers about Sempre que organizares um jantar, queremos conviver neste ambiente acolhedor.
Why is organizares in the future subjunctive here?
We use the future subjunctive after sempre que (whenever) when referring to an action that might happen in the future. Even though the English translation uses the present tense ('Whenever you organize...'), the Portuguese sentence treats your future dinner parties as hypothetical events that have not happened yet.
What would it mean if we used the present indicative and said Sempre que organizas?
If you used the present indicative (Sempre que organizas um jantar), it would describe a habitual routine rather than a future condition. It would mean 'Whenever you [regularly] organize a dinner...' as a statement of fact about your current habits.
Why does the main clause use the present tense (queremos) instead of the future tense?
It is very common to use the present indicative in the main clause to express a current, ongoing desire that applies to a future condition. The speakers are expressing a present fact: 'We [currently] want to socialize here' every time that future condition is met.
Does conviver just mean to live together?
While conviver literally means 'to live together,' in social contexts like a dinner party, it translates to 'to socialize,' 'to mingle,' or 'to hang out.' It emphasizes spending quality time interacting with other people.
