Questions & Answers about L'uomo che lavora qui è un esperto.
Why is "who" translated as che here instead of chi?
In Italian, che is the most common relative pronoun used to link two parts of a sentence. In this context, it translates to "who", "that", or "which". You only use chi when asking a question, like "Chi lavora qui?" (Who works here?), or when it means "the person who / anyone who" as a general subject.
Why is there no apostrophe in un esperto?
Because esperto is a masculine noun. In Italian, you only use an apostrophe for the indefinite article when the noun is feminine and starts with a vowel (because it is a shortened form of una). If the expert were a woman, it would be un'esperta. For masculine words starting with a vowel, the article is just un, so no apostrophe is needed.
If I want to add that this expert "knows the software", do I use sapere or conoscere?
You would use conoscere (e.g., conosce il software). You use conoscere when talking about being familiar with a noun—like a person, a place, or a thing (such as a system or software). You would use sapere if you wanted to say he knows a specific fact, like "He knows where the files are" (Sa dove sono i file), or if he knows how to do an action.
Could I say qua instead of qui?
