Questions & Answers about L'installation du nouveau système va prendre beaucoup de temps.
How does l'installation du nouveau système demonstrate the concept of nominalization here?
It turns the verbal action of installing (installer) into a noun phrase (l'installation). If we used a verbal clause instead, we might say Le fait qu'on installe le nouveau système va prendre beaucoup de temps, but the nominalized version is much more concise and sounds more natural in professional or everyday French.
Why is it du nouveau système instead of just de nouveau système?
When you turn a verb with a direct object (like installer le nouveau système) into a noun phrase, that original direct object connects to the new noun using the preposition de. Here, de combines with the definite article le (from le nouveau système) to form the mandatory contraction du.
Why is prendre used here to say it takes time, rather than mettre?
In French, prendre is used when the activity or task itself requires the time, which perfectly fits our subject l'installation. You use mettre when talking about the person who is spending the time, such as Je vais mettre beaucoup de temps à l'installer (I am going to take a lot of time to install it).
As a quick refresher, why is it beaucoup de temps and not beaucoup du temps?
Adverbs of quantity like beaucoup, peu, and trop are almost always followed by a simple de (or d') without a definite article. Even though time is an uncountable concept that usually takes the partitive article (du temps), the quantity word overrides it.
