Why are there two words (ne and jamais) for "never"?
In French, the negative adverb "never" is made of two parts: ne and jamais. Just like ne... pas (not), these two words act like a sandwich around the conjugated verb. Here, they hug mangeons to make ne mangeons jamais (never eat).
Why is it de bœuf instead of du bœuf?
Normally, to say "some beef", you use the article du (Nous mangeons du bœuf). However, in negative sentences—including those using ne... jamais—the articles un, une, du, de la, and des change to just de (or d'). This shows there is a zero quantity of beef.
Why is there an extra "e" in mangeons? Doesn't the nous form just end in "-ons"?
Verbs that end in "-ger" (like manger) have a small spelling change in the nous form. If we just added "-ons", it would be spelled mangons and pronounced with a hard "g" (like in "go"). Adding the "e" keeps the soft "g" sound (like the "s" in "measure").
Why isn't the word nous repeated before ne mangeons jamais?
Just like in English, if the same subject is doing both actions connected by et (and), you don't have to repeat the subject pronoun. The word nous applies to both avons and ne mangeons jamais.
