Questions & Answers about تا ناخدا بیدار است، ملوانها هم نمیخوابند.
I know tâ often means 'until'. How do we know it means 'as long as' in this sentence?
It is all about the verb tense! When tâ introduces an ongoing, factual state using an indicative tense (like the present indicative است here), it means 'as long as' or 'while'. If it meant 'until', it would typically be followed by the subjunctive mood to show a pending, future threshold.
If I wanted to change the sentence to mean 'until the captain wakes up', how would the grammar change?
You would change the verb in the tâ clause to the subjunctive. You would say تا ناخدا بیدار بشود (using the subjunctive of 'to become'). The subjunctive marks a change of state that hasn't happened yet ('until'), whereas the indicative used here emphasizes the ongoing duration of a state ('as long as').
Why is هم placed immediately after ملوانها? Could I put it at the end of the sentence like the English word 'too'?
No, you cannot put it at the end of the sentence. In Farsi, هم must immediately follow the specific noun or phrase it modifies. Here, it attaches directly to ملوانها to emphasize that 'the sailors also' are affected.
The word for captain, ناخدا, looks like it contains the word for God (خدا). Is that a coincidence?
It is not a coincidence! Historically, خدا meant 'master' or 'lord', which is why it came to be used for 'God'. The first part, نا, is an older root for 'ship' or 'boat' (distantly related to the English word 'navy'). So a ناخدا is literally the 'master of the ship'.
