The suffix -â attached to pâdeshâh (king) is a literary vocative marker used for direct address. You can use the suffix -â alone, the pre-nominal particle ey alone (ey pâdeshâh), or both together (ey pâdeshâhâ). Here, the author chose just the suffix to create a formal, epic tone.
If a noun already ends in a vowel, how do we attach this -â vocative suffix?
For nouns ending in the long vowel â, like khodâ (God), a y is inserted to bridge the gap, making it khodâyâ (O God). For words ending in a silent h (the e sound), a y is also added. Since pâdeshâh ends in a fully pronounced consonant h, the -â simply attaches directly to it without any extra letters.
The English translation says "we will resist", but the Farsi verb moghâvemat mikonim is in the present tense. Why?
In Farsi, clauses introduced by time expressions like zamâni ke (when) frequently use the present indicative for the resulting action, even when referring to a future event. The formal future tense is rarely used in these conditional-style structures, so the present tense naturally translates into English as "we will resist".
Does zamâni ke mean the exact same thing as the more common vaghti ke?
