Formal direct address (ey…, -â)

The Vocative Particle ای

In everyday Farsi, you can address someone simply by saying their name or title. In epic storytelling, poetry, and formal dialogue, however, you will often use the vocative particle ای placed immediately before the noun.

This particle translates to "O" or "Oh" in English and instantly elevates the tone of the address, making it perfect for high fantasy dialogue.

The Literary Suffix -ا

Alternatively, you can mark direct address by attaching the suffix directly to the end of the noun. This is a highly literary structure frequently used for invocations (addressing a deity or lord), as well as for dramatic addresses to warriors, kings, and enemies.

Vowel Endings with -ا

When attaching the suffix to a noun that already ends in a long vowel (such as خدا), Farsi inserts a buffer consonant (usually ی) to smoothly bridge the two sounds together. For example, خدا becomes خدایا.
