Questions & Answers about ما نمیتوانستیم این سرنوشت تاریک را نپذیریم.
How does the double negative in نمیتوانستیم ... نپذیریم work, and why not just say "we had to accept"?
This structure uses a negative modal verb (نمیتوانستیم, we could not) combined with a negative subjunctive verb (نپذیریم, not accept). Literally translating to "we could not not accept," this double negation emphasizes a complete lack of alternatives. It creates a much stronger, more dramatic sense of inevitability than simply saying "we had to accept" (مجبور بودیم بپذیریم).
Why is the second verb نپذیریم in the subjunctive mood here?
Modal verbs of ability, like توانستن (to be able to), always require the main verb that follows them to be in the subjunctive mood. Normally, the subjunctive starts with the prefix بـ, but because we are negating it to create the double negative, the بـ is replaced by the negative prefix نـ.
Why does the object marker را come after the adjective تاریک rather than right after the noun سرنوشت?
The word را marks the entire definite direct object. In this sentence, the direct object isn't just "fate" (سرنوشت), but the whole noun phrase "this dark fate" (این سرنوشت تاریک). Therefore, را must be placed at the very end of that phrase, after the adjective.
What is the infinitive of نپذیریم, and why does its stem look different from its past tense form?
The infinitive is پذیرفتن (to accept). Like many Farsi verbs, it has an irregular present stem. While the past stem is پذیرفت, the present stem drops the "ft" to become just پذیر. You use this present stem for all present and subjunctive forms, which is why we get نپذیریم.
