Double negation for strong obligation (ne-mi-tavânam na-)

The Double Negation Structure

In Farsi, using two negative verbs together is a powerful grammatical tool. By combining a negative modal verb with a negative main verb, you express absolute certainty or an unavoidable obligation. It is the direct equivalent of saying "I couldn't not do it"—meaning you had absolutely no other choice.

To build this structure:

  • Use the negative form of توانستن (to be able to) in either the present (e.g., نمی‌توانم) or past (e.g., نمی‌توانستم).
  • Follow it with the negative subjunctive form of your main verb (replacing the affirmative بـ prefix with the negative نـ).
  • Ensure both verbs are conjugated for the exact same subject.

Working with Compound Verbs

Narrating an espionage thriller requires action-heavy compound verbs. When making the subjunctive verb negative in a compound verb, the negative prefix نـ attaches exclusively to the light verb (like کردن). The noun or adjective component stays completely unchanged.

Different Light Verbs and Simple Verbs

The exact same logic applies regardless of the verb type. For compound verbs that use دادن (to give), the negative prefix attaches directly to the light verb to yield subjunctive forms like ندهم or ندهد.

to rat out / to give away
لو دادنlo dâdan

For simple (non-compound) verbs, you just attach the نـ prefix to the verb stem as usual, yielding strong, fatalistic statements.
