Toen ze de plaat uitbrachten, zat er een kras in de groef.

Questions & Answers about Toen ze de plaat uitbrachten, zat er een kras in de groef.

Why do we use toen here instead of wanneer?
Even at the B2 level, it is easy to mix these up! You use toen for a specific, single event in the past (When they released the record). Wanneer is used for questions (When?) or for repeated/conditional events (Whenever). Since the release of this record happened once in the past, it must be toen.
Why is the separable verb uitbrengen written as one connected word (uitbrachten)?
In a normal main clause, a separable verb splits up (for example: Ze brachten de plaat uit). However, this first part of the sentence starts with toen, which makes it a subordinate clause. In subordinate clauses, the verbs are pushed to the end, forcing the prefix (uit) and the conjugated verb (brachten) back together into a single word: uitbrachten.
Why does the sentence use zat (from zitten) instead of was (from zijn) for 'was'?
Dutch strongly prefers positional verbs (staan, liggen, zitten, hangen) over zijn (to be) to describe where something is located. We use zitten (to sit) when something is embedded, attached, or enclosed inside something else. Since the scratch is physically etched into the groove (in de groef), zat is the most natural choice.
Why is er placed right after the verb zat?
Because the entire first clause (Toen ze de plaat uitbrachten) occupies the first position of the main sentence, the main verb (zat) must come immediately after it to satisfy the verb-second (V2) rule. Right after the verb, we use the dummy subject er. Just like in English where you say 'there was a scratch', Dutch uses er to introduce a new, indefinite subject (een kras).
