Questions & Answers about Kijk naar de zandloper, we kraken de code in vijf minuten!
Why do we use in here instead of over or binnen?
In this sentence, in describes the duration needed to complete the action (the process of cracking it takes five minutes). If you used over vijf minuten, it would mean you are waiting five minutes before you even start cracking it. Binnen vijf minuten would mean within five minutes (a deadline limit). The hourglass (zandloper) emphasizes the duration of time passing.
The translation says "we will crack", so why does the Dutch use the present tense we kraken?
Dutch frequently uses the simple present tense to talk about the future, especially when the context makes the future timeframe obvious (like watching an active hourglass). Using the present tense instead of zullen kraken makes the statement sound much more immediate, dynamic, and certain.
Is de code kraken a literal translation from English, or is it natural Dutch?
It is completely natural Dutch! Just like in English, the verb kraken (to crack) is the standard term used for breaking passwords, opening safes, or solving ciphers.
Can I leave out naar and just say Kijk de zandloper?
No, you cannot omit it here. Just like the English phrase "look at", the Dutch verb kijken requires the preposition naar when you are directing your gaze at a specific object or person.
