Point in the Future: Over
In an escape room, tracking time is everything. To say that an event will happen a certain amount of time from now, use the preposition over.
Be careful: while English uses "in" for this concept (as in "the alarm goes off in two minutes"), Dutch uses over. It points to a specific moment in the future when that time has passed.

| In ten minutes, the hourglass is empty. | Over tien minuten is de zandloper leeg. |

Deadlines and Limits: Binnen
When you are facing a strict time limit and must complete a task before the time runs out, use binnen. This translates perfectly to the English "within". It means the action will happen at some point before the maximum time limit is reached.
| Within an hour, we will find the way out. | Binnen een uur vinden we de uitweg. |
| Enter the combination within two minutes! | Vul de combinatie binnen twee minuten in! |
| Crack the combination lock within one minute! | Kraak het cijferslot binnen één minuut! |
Duration Required: In
When you want to describe how long it takes to complete an action from start to finish, use in. While it looks identical to the English "in", in Dutch time phrases it strictly focuses on the duration needed to accomplish a task.
| She can unlock the combination lock in one minute. | Zij kan het cijferslot in één minuut ontgrendelen. |
| Can you find the way out in three minutes? | Kan jij de uitweg in drie minuten vinden? |
The Final Countdown
Pay close attention to which preposition you use, as it completely changes the meaning of your timeline. In a high-stakes scenario, you might have to finish a puzzle in a specific amount of time, binnen a strict deadline, because an alarm is guaranteed to go off over just a few minutes.
