Questions & Answers about Over tien minuten is de zandloper leeg.
Why do we use over instead of in when the English translation says 'in ten minutes'?
When pointing to a specific moment in the future relative to now, Dutch uses over. If you said in tien minuten, it would emphasize the duration needed for an action to complete (the process of emptying takes ten minutes) rather than stating what the status will be exactly ten minutes from now.
What would happen to the meaning if I used binnen instead of over?
Replacing over with binnen changes the meaning to a deadline limit. Binnen tien minuten means 'within ten minutes' or sometime before the ten minutes are up. Over tien minuten points precisely to that exact future moment.
Why does the verb is come before the subject de zandloper?
This is the Dutch V2 (verb second) rule in action. Because you started the sentence with the time phrase over tien minuten, the main verb is must take the second structural position. The subject de zandloper is then inverted and pushed directly behind the verb.
The sentence is about the future, so why is it in the present tense?
Dutch frequently uses the present tense to talk about the future, especially when a specific time phrase (like over tien minuten) is already doing the job of showing when it happens. Using the present tense here makes the statement sound natural and absolutely certain.
