Questions & Answers about De ring moet in de spleet van de bank zijn gevallen.
In English, we say "must HAVE fallen". Why does the Dutch sentence use zijn instead of hebben?
Even though it is used with the modal verb moet, the main verb vallen (to fall) still dictates the auxiliary. Because a change of state or location (like falling) requires zijn in the perfect tense, the construction here is moet ... zijn gevallen rather than using hebben.
Could I say ...gevallen zijn instead of ...zijn gevallen at the end of the sentence?
Yes! In Dutch verb clusters at the end of a clause, you can often swap the auxiliary and the past participle. Both zijn gevallen and gevallen zijn are completely correct and natural.
Does in de spleet van de bank literally mean "in the split of the couch"?
Pretty much! De spleet translates to a crack, crevice, or slit. So in de spleet van de bank is the natural way to describe losing something between the cushions or in the crevices of a sofa.
How do we know moet here means probability ("must have") rather than obligation ("was required to")?
Context and the perfect infinitive (zijn gevallen) give it away. Inanimate objects like a ring cannot be forced to do something. When moeten is combined with a past participle construction, it almost always expresses strong deduction or probability rather than an obligation.
