Questions & Answers about Had ik mijn creditcard maar tijdens de overstap!
Why does this sentence start with the verb had instead of the subject ik?
This is an exclamation expressing a strong wish or regret. In Dutch, you can create this 'If only...' structure by putting the verb first, followed by the subject, and including a modal particle like maar or toch.
Could I express the same wish without the word maar?
No, without maar, the sentence just becomes a regular yes/no question: Had ik mijn creditcard tijdens de overstap? (Did I have my credit card during the transfer?). The particle maar is essential here to signal that you are expressing a wish rather than asking a question.
Why use the past tense had if I might be wishing for the credit card right now?
Dutch, much like English, uses the past tense to describe hypothetical or unreal situations. By using had instead of the present tense heb, you show that you don't actually have the card, but you strongly wish you did.
What exactly does overstap refer to here?
De overstap means the transfer, connection, or layover during a journey. It comes from the separable verb overstappen (to transfer or switch) and is commonly used for flights, trains, and buses.
