Questions & Answers about Je moest tijdens de vergadering een standpunt innemen.
Why do we use innemen here instead of just nemen for "to take"?
In Dutch function verb structures, the choice of verb is often highly specific to the noun and cannot be translated word-for-word from English. While English uses "take" for a position, Dutch uses innemen (literally "to take in" or "occupy") when paired with standpunt. Saying een standpunt nemen is incorrect.
How does een standpunt innemen change the tone compared to just saying je mening geven (giving your opinion)?
Een standpunt innemen is a classic function verb structure that makes the sentence sound more formal, objective, and decisive. While je mening geven is merely sharing what you think, een standpunt innemen implies officially adopting a firm stance on an issue. This fits perfectly in the context of a vergadering (formal meeting).
If innemen is a separable verb, why doesn't it split in this sentence?
Because of the modal verb moest (had to). Modal verbs push the main verb to the end of the sentence in its full infinitive form. When a separable verb acts as an infinitive at the end of a clause, its prefix and base verb stay attached together as one word (innemen).
How would this sentence look if I just wanted to say "You took a position" without using "had to"?
