Questions & Answers about Bij het annuleren van de afspraak wordt de wachtlijst regelmatig bijgewerkt.
How does the nominal style work in Bij het annuleren van de afspraak, and what would the normal full clause be?
It turns the action into a noun phrase using het + infinitive + van. This makes the sentence more formal and compact. A full subordinate clause would be something like Wanneer de afspraak wordt geannuleerd (When the appointment is canceled).
Why use the preposition bij here instead of na?
Using bij means 'upon' or 'in the event of', linking the update directly to the trigger of the cancellation. If you used Na het annuleren (After canceling), it would emphasize that the update happens sequentially later, rather than as a direct, immediate response.
Since this uses a reduced clause, who is actually doing the canceling?
The beauty of the nominal style is that it lets you leave the subject out entirely. Combined with the passive voice in the main clause (wordt... bijgewerkt), the sentence focuses purely on the process, meaning that whenever a cancellation occurs, an update follows without specifying who canceled it.
Why does the verb wordt come right after the comma?
The entire phrase Bij het annuleren van de afspraak acts as a single block of circumstance occupying the first position in the sentence. This triggers inversion, forcing the finite verb (wordt) into the second position, right before the subject (de wachtlijst).
