Questions & Answers about Mijn schijnwerper staat in de coulissen, waar is de jouwe?
Why do we use staat here for the spotlight?
In Dutch, we frequently use positional verbs (staan, liggen, zitten) to describe where something is, rather than just using zijn (to be). Because a spotlight (schijnwerper) rests on a base or is mounted in a fixed, upright position, it physically stands, so we use staat.
Wait, if the spotlight staat in the wings, why does the second half of the sentence ask 'waar is de jouwe'?
While positional verbs like staan are highly preferred for stating the specific location of objects, zijn is still acceptable and commonly used, especially in quick questions about general whereabouts. Asking waar staat de jouwe? would also be completely correct and arguably more natural, but is works perfectly fine here.
Why is it de jouwe and not het jouwe at the end of the sentence?
The pronoun de jouwe (yours) refers back to de schijnwerper. Since schijnwerper is a de word, the independent possessive pronoun must also take de. If we were talking about a het word, like het script, it would be het jouwe.
