Past participial clauses

To describe an action or state that happened before the main action of a sentence, you can use a past participial clause. This advanced structure is often used in storytelling and written Dutch.

Past participial clauses

A past participial clause is built around a past participle (like geschminkt, made up). When placed at the beginning of a sentence, the entire clause occupies the first grammatical position. This triggers inversion in the main clause, meaning the finite verb comes right after the comma, immediately before the subject.

You will often see these clauses expanded with door (by) to indicate who performed the prior action.

Made up by the actress, the extra waited behind the scenery.
Geschminkt door de actrice, wachtte de figurant achter het decor.

Notice how the main clause starts with the verb wachtte (waited), directly preceding the subject de figurant (the extra).

Illuminated by the spotlight, the singer began the performance.
Verlicht door de schijnwerper, begon de zangeres aan de voorstelling.
Directed by her father, the actress played the monologue perfectly.
Geregisseerd door haar vader, speelde de actrice de monoloog perfect.

Matching subjects

When using a participial clause, the implied subject of the clause must always match the actual subject of the main clause. If the extra was the one encouraged by the director, the extra must be the subject of the main clause who starts improvising.

Encouraged by the director, the extra started to improvise.
Aangemoedigd door de regisseur, ging de figurant improviseren.
Prepared for the performance, the actor walked to the dressing room.
Voorbereid op de voorstelling, liep de acteur naar de kleedkamer.
