Questions & Answers about De kapitein staat boven, en wij lopen op het dek.

Why is it boven here instead of naar boven?
The captain is already located upstairs, doing an action in a fixed place. If he were actively moving up the stairs, we would use the directional form naar boven (upwards). Because his location is static, we use the absolute spatial adverb boven.
Why does the sentence use staat instead of is for the captain's location?
Dutch strongly prefers using posture verbs (staan, zitten, liggen) over zijn (to be) to describe where something or someone is located. Since a person standing watch on a ship is naturally on their feet, we use staat (stands).
Why do we use op for the deck?
Just like in English, Dutch uses op (on) for open, flat surfaces like a ship's deck (het dek). If the crew went inside the lower levels of the ship, they would use a spatial adverb like binnen (inside) or beneden (downstairs).
