Questions & Answers about Dat is slechts een mooi sentiment, maar niet de waarheid.

Why is it mooi sentiment and not mooie sentiment?
Because sentiment is a het word. Remember the rule: when a het word is preceded by een (a/an), the adjective describing it drops the -e at the end. You can easily tell that sentiment is a het word because it ends in the suffix -ment. Almost all Dutch nouns ending in -ment (like het moment, het argument) take het.
Is there a trick to remembering the gender of waarheid?
Yes! Nouns that end in the suffix -heid are always de words. This suffix turns adjectives into abstract nouns, similar to "-ness" or "-ty" in English. For example, waar (true) becomes de waarheid (the truth). You'll see this in many other words, like de vrijheid (freedom) and de mogelijkheid (possibility).
What is the difference between slechts and alleen?
Slechts translates to "merely" or "only." It is slightly more formal and literary than alleen (only) or gewoon (just). While you could grammatically say Dat is alleen een mooi sentiment, using slechts strongly emphasizes that it is nothing more than a sentiment, fitting the philosophical tone of the sentence.
Why do we use niet instead of geen to say "not the truth"?
Because we are negating a specific, defined noun (de waarheid). You use niet to negate verbs, adjectives, and nouns that have a definite article (de or het). You only use geen to negate nouns that are uncountable, plural without an article, or preceded by the indefinite article een.
