Vandaag vinden we er veel oude spullen.

From Lesson 266:Position of "er"·Dutch

Questions & Answers about Vandaag vinden we er veel oude spullen.

Why is er placed right after we instead of later in the sentence?
Because er is an unstressed word, it likes to appear early in the sentence (in what is called the 'middle field'). The general rule is that er comes immediately after the conjugated verb (vinden) or, if the subject is flipped to come after the verb like in this sentence, immediately after the subject (we).
What does er mean here? Could I use daar instead?
In this sentence, er is a locative word meaning 'there'. You could use daar instead (Vandaag vinden we daar veel oude spullen), but daar adds strong emphasis, as in 'We find a lot of old stuff right there'. Because the location isn't the main focus of the sentence, the unstressed er sounds much more natural.
Why does the verb vinden come before the subject we?
This is a standard refresher of the V2 (verb-second) rule. Because you started the sentence with the time word Vandaag, the verb must take the second position in the sentence. This pushes the subject we to the other side of the verb, a swap known as inversion.
Why does oud get an -e at the end (oude spullen)?
Adjectives usually get an -e ending when placed directly before a noun. The only time you drop the -e is when the noun is a singular het-word and has no specific article (like de, het, or deze) before it. Because spullen is a plural noun, the adjective must take the -e.
The English translation says 'stuff', which is singular. Is spullen singular or plural?
Spullen is plural. While the English word 'stuff' is uncountable and treated as singular, the Dutch word spullen refers to a collection of things or belongings and is always treated as plural. (The singular word spul exists, meaning 'stuff' or 'material', but spullen is what you use for everyday objects and belongings).
