Questions & Answers about Weet jij of deze verbinding morgen rechtstreeks naar het station gaat?
Why are morgen, rechtstreeks, and naar het station in that exact order?
They follow the standard Dutch word order rule for the middle of a sentence: Time, then Manner, then Place (TMP). morgen is the time (tomorrow), rechtstreeks is the manner (directly), and naar het station is the place (to the station).
Why is the verb gaat at the very end of the sentence instead of after the subject?
The word of (if or whether) introduces a subordinate clause. In Dutch subordinate clauses, the conjugated verb (like gaat) gets pushed to the very end of the sentence, after all the time, manner, and place details.
Why does this sentence use of for 'if' instead of als?
You use of when 'if' really means 'whether' (usually introducing a yes or no question or a choice). You use als for conditional statements, like 'if it rains, I will stay home.' Since you are asking whether the train goes to the station, of is the correct word.
Is rechtstreeks a common word, and what exactly does it mean?
Yes, it is very common in travel! It means 'directly' or 'straight.' In the context of public transport like a verbinding (connection), it means you do not have to transfer or switch trains.
