Questions & Answers about Ik was heel blij, want ik had de film al eerder gezien.
Why do we use had instead of heb in this sentence?
We use had because this sentence uses the past perfect tense. Just like in English ("I had seen"), it describes an action that happened before another action in the past. You were happy in the past (ik was heel blij), because even before that moment, you had seen the movie (ik had ... gezien).
Why is gezien placed at the very end of the sentence?
In Dutch, when you have a helping verb (like had) and a past participle (like gezien), the past participle gets pushed to the very end of the clause. The helping verb stays in the normal second position. That's why the structure is literally "ik had [the movie already earlier] gezien".
Why does the word order stay normal after want?
Want (because) is a coordinating conjunction, which means it joins two independent sentences together without changing their word order. So, you just use the standard order: Subject (ik) + Verb (had). As a quick refresher, if you had used omdat (which also means "because"), it would have pushed the verb had to the very end of the sentence to sit next to gezien.
Why do we use both al and eerder together? Doesn't al just mean "already"?
