Questions & Answers about Ik kan de muziek niet horen.
Why is the verb kan used instead of kunnen?
kan is the correct form of the modal verb kunnen (can / to be able to) for the pronoun ik (I). In the singular forms (ik, jij, hij, zij, het), the verb is usually kan. You only use the full word kunnen for plural pronouns like wij (we) or zij (they).
Why is the main verb horen all the way at the end of the sentence?
This is a key rule for Dutch word order! When you use a modal verb like kan, it takes the normal verb spot (second place in the sentence). The main action verb—in this case, horen (to hear)—must be left in its full dictionary form and gets pushed to the very end of the sentence.
Why is niet placed after de muziek? Shouldn't it be right after kan?
In English we say 'cannot', keeping the verb and the 'not' together, but Dutch is different. The word niet (not) generally comes after specific direct objects. Because de muziek means 'the music' (a specific thing), niet must be placed directly after it.
Could I use this sentence to say I am not listening to the music?
