Questions & Answers about We wonen in een groot land.
Why do we use in for a country instead of op?
Just like in English, you live in a country, so you use in. You would use op (on) for places like an island (op een eiland), but for areas with enclosed borders like a city or country, in is the right preposition.
Why is the adjective groot here instead of grote?
This is a very important rule for adjectives! Usually, you add an -e to the end of an adjective before a noun. But because land is a het word (neuter gender) and it comes after the unspecific word een (a), the adjective drops the extra -e.
Why does the verb wonen end in -en here?
Because the subject is we (we), which is plural. In Dutch, all plural subjects (wij/we, jullie, zij/ze) use the full dictionary form of the verb, which almost always ends in -en.
Could I say Wij wonen instead of We wonen?
Yes! We is just the unstressed, casual version of wij. You can use either, but we is much more common in everyday speech unless you really want to emphasize that we (and not someone else) live there.
