Questions & Answers about De student heeft een probleem en een vraag.
Why do we use heeft instead of heb or hebben?
Heeft is the singular form of the verb hebben (to have) used for he, she, and it. Because de student is a single person, we use heeft. You only use heb for ik (I) and hebben for plurals.
If there were multiple students, how would the verb change?
If the subject was plural, like de studenten (the students), you would use the plural form of the verb, which is hebben. The sentence would be: De studenten hebben een probleem en een vraag.
Is probleem pronounced exactly like the English word 'problem'?
Not quite! The double ee in probleem makes a long vowel sound, similar to the vowel in the English word 'play'. It sounds more like 'pro-BLAYM'.
Both nouns use een. Does that mean they have the same gender?
Not necessarily! The word een (a or an) is used for all singular nouns, whether they are de words or het words. If we used 'the' instead, you would see their actual genders: het probleem and de vraag.
