Questions & Answers about أردت أن أشتري سيارة، لكنني لم أستطع.
Why is the middle vowel missing in أردت (I wanted) when the root has a long vowel (like in أراد)?
This verb comes from a hollow root (its middle letter is a weak vowel). In the past tense, when you add a suffix that starts with a consonant (like the ـت for 'I'), the final letter of the verb root takes a sukun (no vowel). Arabic hates having two unvoweled letters in a row, so the long middle vowel in أراد is dropped to fix this, making it أردت.
Because of أن, the verb أشتري (I buy) is in the subjunctive mood. How does this affect its pronunciation here?
Usually, present-tense verbs ending in a weak letter like ي keep their final short vowel hidden. However, in the subjunctive mood (triggered here by أن), verbs ending in ي actually take a visible, pronounced fatha. So this is pronounced أنْ أشتريَ (an ashtariya).
Why is there an extra ن in لكنني (but I)? Couldn't we just say لكني?
Both لكنني and لكني are correct and mean 'but I'. The extra ن is called the nun of protection (نون الوقاية). It is often inserted between a particle (like إنّ or لكنّ) or a verb and the first-person pronoun suffix (ـي) to preserve the word's original ending sound.
Why does أستطع (I could) lose its long 'ee' sound (ي) compared to its normal present tense form أستطيع?
The particle لم (did not) forces the following present-tense verb into the jussive mood, which means placing a sukun on the final letter (ع). This creates a clash: the long vowel ي and the newly unvoweled ع are next to each other. To avoid this double-consonant cluster, the weak long vowel ي is dropped, turning أستطيع into أستطع.
