B1 Thai is not simply A2 with longer sentences. The central task is to keep a listener oriented while several events, participants, and viewpoints unfold. Thai often links predicates without overt conjunctions, omits recoverable subjects and objects, and changes social reference as relationships become relevant. Connected speech then reduces or reshapes cues that looked clear on the page. These systems must be learned together.
This path assumes active control of the A2 route: common script patterns, everyday classifiers, clock and calendar time, basic aspect, polite requests, and routine service texts. Its B1 label is guide-specific. Use the milestones as evidence of readiness rather than treating page completion as proficiency.
Time budget and working method
Allow 70–95 focused hours, usually fourteen to nineteen weeks at five hours a week. Keep one participant map and one event timeline beside every connected text. Read aloud from Thai script, predict phrase boundaries, then compare with audio. RTGS remains a check on segmental reading, not a record of tone, length, or natural prosody.
Ordered route
| Stage | Study these linked pages in order | Why this order | Suggested time |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Hear connected units | syllabification → rhythm and stress → connected-speech intonation → r, l, and clusters | Reliable lexical forms come before interpreting reductions and phrase-level prominence. | 8–11 h |
| 2. Stabilize social reference | names for I and you → kin terms → พี่ and น้อง → role titles → reference shifts → service reference | Learn the relationship system before expanding informal particle use. | 11–14 h |
| 3. Chain actions iconically | serial-verb overview → shared subjects → iconic order → go for a purpose → sequences → long chains | Short shared-subject chains precede longer sequences with more possible boundaries. | 12–15 h |
| 4. Organize event time and viewpoint | narrative sequencing → aspect stacking → แล้ว scope → continuative มา → modal order | Narrative order must be clear before several aspectual and modal operators are combined. | 10–13 h |
| 5. Link explicit clauses | relative ที่ → ว่า complements → ให้ subordination → cause → condition → before and after | Identification and complementation precede larger logical relations. | 13–17 h |
| 6. Track what Thai leaves unsaid | topic–comment → zero anaphora → reference chains → paragraph cohesion → question focus | Omission is interpretable only against discourse structure and a stable reference chain. | 9–12 h |
| 7. Integrate speech and text | LINE thread → clinic → workplace → invitation → complaint | Move from familiar messaging to institutional and socially delicate episodes. | 7–13 h |
Milestone 1: hear the phrase, then explain the spelling
Transcribe six short utterances from a familiar speaker. Mark where stress and intonation group words together, but retain standard Thai spelling. Then annotate the consonant class and syllable type of any word whose tone you misheard.
เดี๋ยวพี่โทรกลับนะ ตอนนี้กำลังขึ้นรถอยู่
diao phi tho klap na ton ni kamlang khuen rot yu
I'll call you back in a moment; I'm getting on the bus now. (older speaker referring to self as phi)
ถึงแล้วบอกด้วย จะได้ลงไปรับ
thueng laeo bok duai cha dai long pai rap
Tell me when you arrive, so I can go down to meet you.
Milestone 2: shift reference for a reason
Role-play one family conversation and one workplace conversation. Identify every reference form by speaker, addressee, age or role, and current activity. A shift from a name to พี่, แม่, อาจารย์, or zero must make the relationship clearer, not merely display vocabulary.
คุณแม่รอสักครู่นะคะ เดี๋ยวพยาบาลเรียกชื่อค่ะ
khun mae ro sak khru na kha diao phayaban riak chue kha
Please wait a moment, ma'am; the nurse will call your name. (clinic service language)
อาจารย์ส่งไฟล์มาแล้วครับ ผมจะตรวจให้เสร็จเย็นนี้
achan song fai ma laeo khrap phom cha truat hai set yen ni
Professor, you've sent the file; I'll finish checking it this evening. (male speaker)
Milestone 3: build chains with one recoverable subject
Film or imagine a short errand and narrate it in the order the actions occur. Start with two-verb chains, then add direction or purpose. Mark where a new subject would require a clearer clause boundary.
เขาเดินออกไปซื้อกาแฟข้างล่าง
khao doen ok pai sue kafae khang lang
He walked out to buy coffee downstairs.
ฉันหยิบเอกสารขึ้นมาอ่านแล้วจดประเด็นสำคัญไว้ค่ะ
chan yip ekkasan khuen ma an laeo chot praden samkhan wai kha
I picked up the document, read it, and noted the important points. (female speaker)
The second sentence is not one giant English-style verb. Its predicates form an iconic sequence: pick up → read → note and retain. If the events do not share a participant or natural order, use an overt subject or linker rather than forcing serialization.
Milestone 4: report causes, instructions, and viewpoints
Retell a workplace disruption in five to eight clauses. Include one reported statement with ว่า, one requested action with ให้, one cause, and one condition. Then draw the event timeline and identify the source of each opinion.
หัวหน้าบอกว่าพรุ่งนี้ให้เข้าประชุมออนไลน์เพราะห้องใหญ่ปิดซ่อมครับ
hua na bok wa phrung ni hai khao prachum onlai phro hong yai pit som khrap
The supervisor said that tomorrow we should join the meeting online because the large room is closed for repairs. (male speaker)
ถ้าฝนยังไม่หยุด เราค่อยเลื่อนกิจกรรมไปวันเสาร์
tha fon yang mai yut rao khoi luean kitchakam pai wan sao
If the rain still hasn't stopped, we'll then postpone the activity until Saturday.
ร้านที่เราไปเมื่อวานแจ้งว่าจะส่งของให้ใหม่ค่ะ
ran thi rao pai muea wan chaeng wa cha song khong hai mai kha
The shop we went to yesterday said it would send us a replacement. (female speaker)
Milestone 5: preserve a reference chain through omission
Annotate an eight-turn chat. For every omitted subject or object, write the intended referent in the margin and cite the cue that licenses it: current topic, adjacency pair, social role, or parallel structure. If two referents remain equally plausible, repair the Thai message.
นิดโทรหาหมอแล้ว แต่ยังไม่ได้นัด เพราะวันนี้คลินิกปิด
nit tho ha mo laeo tae yang mai dai nat phro wan ni khlinik pit
Nit called the doctor, but hasn't made an appointment yet because the clinic is closed today.
Here the omitted subject of ยังไม่ได้นัด is naturally Nit because the topic continues. An isolated grammar rule cannot guarantee that reading; the discourse chain does.
Review loops
Loop 1: sound → reference → boundary
After Stage 4, choose one recorded dialogue each week. First mark intonation units, then supply omitted participants, and finally decide which predicate sequences are serial and which are separate clauses. Repeat the dialogue while preserving its rhythm rather than reading each written word with equal force.
Loop 2: social role → clause link → text genre
After Stage 7, rewrite one LINE exchange as a clinic note and as a workplace update. Preserve facts while changing reference terms, particles, explicitness, and clause linkage. Explain every change.
เมื่อเช้าลูกค้าโทรมาแจ้งว่ายังไม่ได้รับสินค้า ฝ่ายจัดส่งกำลังตรวจสอบให้อยู่ค่ะ
muea chao lukkha tho ma chaeng wa yang mai dai rap sinkha fai chat song kamlang truat sop hai yu kha
This morning a customer called to report that the goods had not arrived; the delivery department is checking for them now. (female speaker, workplace update)
Final can-do project
Produce a three-minute narrated problem-and-solution episode plus a twelve-turn dialogue about it. Include at least one relationship-sensitive reference shift, two serial-verb chains, a reported statement, a condition, aspect marking, and three recoverable omissions. Provide the Thai transcript and RTGS only after you have checked the script against your recording.
เมื่อวานผมไปรับพัสดุแต่หาอาคารไม่เจอ เลยโทรถามพี่ที่ทำงาน พี่บอกให้เดินผ่านธนาคารแล้วเลี้ยวซ้าย สุดท้ายก็ไปรับทันก่อนปิดครับ
muea wan phom pai rap phatsadu tae ha akhan mai choe loei tho tham phi thi tham ngan phi bok hai doen phan thanakhan laeo liao sai sutthai ko pai rap than kon pit khrap
Yesterday I went to collect a parcel but couldn't find the building, so I called an older colleague. They told me to walk past the bank and turn left. In the end, I collected it before closing. (male speaker)
Move to the B2 path when you can defend the participant, scope, and register choices in this project—not merely produce a long string of predicates.
Common Mistakes
Letting earlier script and classifier work decay
Longer sentences magnify lexical-tone and boundary errors. Keep a short script-and-tone diagnostic in every week, and keep classifiers inside full noun phrases rather than reducing them to detached noun–classifier flashcards.
❌ พอเริ่มเรียนประโยคยาวก็หยุดทบทวนการอ่านและลักษณนาม
Faulty B1 plan: longer clauses do not remove the need for script, tone, and classifier review.
✅ ทุกสัปดาห์ฉันทบทวนเสียงวรรณยุกต์และวลีนามที่มีลักษณนามค่ะ
thuk sapda chan thopthuan siang wannayuk lae wali nam thi mi laksananam kha
Every week I review tones and noun phrases containing classifiers. (female learner)
Treating every adjacent verb as one serial construction
Serialization requires coherent event and participant relations. When a new actor enters, mark it; when cause or condition matters, use the appropriate linker.
❌ เห็นคำกริยาอยู่ติดกันแล้ววิเคราะห์เป็นกริยาเรียงทั้งหมด
Incorrect analysis rule: adjacent predicates do not automatically form one serial-verb construction.
✅ ถ้าผู้กระทำเปลี่ยน ต้องตรวจขอบเขตประโยคใหม่ครับ
tha phu kratham plian tong truat khopkhet prayok mai khrap
If the actor changes, recheck the clause boundary. (male learner explaining the procedure)
Repeating pronouns in every clause
English often requires an overt subject where Thai uses zero anaphora. Do not delete mechanically either: omit only when the referent stays recoverable.
มาลีเปิดประตู วางกระเป๋า แล้วเดินเข้าไปในครัว
mali poet pratu wang krapao laeo doen khao pai nai khrua
Mali opened the door, put down her bag, and walked into the kitchen.
❌ เติมเขาหรือเธอหน้าคำกริยาทุกคำตามประโยคภาษาอังกฤษ
Incorrect transfer rule: Thai does not require an overt pronoun before every predicate.
✅ ระบุชื่อหนึ่งครั้ง แล้วละประธานต่อเมื่อผู้ฟังยังตามได้
rabu chue nueng khrang laeo la prathan to muea phu fang yang tam dai
State the name once, then omit the continuing subject only while the listener can still follow it. (study instruction)
Using intimate particles before securing the relationship
Do not imitate ว่ะ, เว้ย, or teasing stacks simply because you hear them frequently. At B1, analyze speaker, addressee, stance, and setting before adopting them.
❌ เลียนแบบคำลงท้ายของเพื่อนสนิทแล้วใช้กับหัวหน้าทุกคำ
Serious register mistake: intimate particles cannot be transferred wholesale to a supervisor.
✅ ก่อนใช้คำลงท้ายใหม่ ผมจดว่าใครพูดกับใครและพูดที่ไหนครับ
kon chai kham long thai mai phom chot wa khrai phut kap khrai lae phut thi nai khrap
Before using a new final particle, I note who said it to whom and where. (male learner)
Reading RTGS as if it encoded connected speech
RTGS omits tone and length and does not show intonation units. It cannot tell you which word bears contrastive prominence or which reduction is appropriate in a relationship.
❌ อ่านอักษรโรมันด้วยจังหวะเท่ากันทุกคำ แล้วเดาเสียงวรรณยุกต์
Incorrect method: RTGS does not supply Thai rhythm or lexical tones.
✅ ฟังเสียงจริง ทำเครื่องหมายกลุ่มจังหวะ แล้วกลับมาตรวจอักษรไทย
fang siang ching tham khrueangmai klum changwa laeo klap ma truat akson thai
Listen to authentic audio, mark rhythm groups, then return to the Thai script. (study instruction)
Key Takeaways
