ก่อนที่ and หลังจากที่ introduce a whole event as the temporal boundary for another event: “before X happens” and “after X happens.” They are standard in Central Thai across careful conversation and writing. Everyday speech often shortens หลังจากที่ to หลังจาก, while ก่อนที่ commonly expands to ก่อนที่จะ when the later event is viewed prospectively.
These linkers do not conjugate either verb. Thai orders two propositions, marks their temporal relation, and lets context plus aspect markers show whether an event is pending, underway, or complete. The shorter noun-and-event patterns are covered in the basic ก่อน and หลัง guide; this page focuses on full clauses and their scope.
The two clause frames
| Boundary | Productive frame | Typical interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| before | ก่อนที่ + subject + (จะ) + event, main clause | the main event occurs earlier than the subordinate event |
| after | หลังจากที่ + subject + event + (แล้ว), main clause | the subordinate event supplies the earlier, often completed boundary |
| compact speech | หลังจาก + clause / event | same ordering with ที่ omitted |
ก่อนที่ลูกค้าจะมา เราต้องจัดห้องให้เรียบร้อยครับ
kon thi luk kha cha ma rao tong chat hong hai riap roi khrap
Before the clients arrive, we need to get the room in order. (ordinary polite planning, male speaker)
ฉันปิดหน้าต่างก่อนที่ฝนจะตกค่ะ
chan pit natang kon thi fon cha tok kha
I closed the window before it rained. (ordinary polite report, female speaker)
หลังจากที่ประชุมเสร็จแล้ว ผมจะโทรกลับนะครับ
lang chak thi prachum set laeo phom cha tho klap na khrap
After the meeting is over, I'll call you back. (ordinary polite promise, male speaker)
เราไปกินข้าวกันหลังจากคุยกับหัวหน้าเสร็จดีไหมคะ
rao pai kin khao kan lang chak khui kap hua na set di mai kha
Shall we go eat after we finish talking with the manager? (ordinary polite suggestion, female speaker)
In the first and third examples, the temporal clause comes first and frames everything that follows. In the second and fourth, it comes after the main proposition and answers “when?” Neither order copies an English tense template.
Why จะ often follows ก่อนที่
In ก่อนที่...จะ..., จะ presents the subordinate event as not yet realized from the earlier reference point. It can therefore occur even when the entire story is in the past. This is relative prospectivity, not an English future tense.
ก่อนที่รถไฟจะออก พนักงานตรวจตั๋วของผู้โดยสารทุกคนครับ
kon thi rot fai cha ok phanakngan truat tua khong phu doisan thuk khon khrap
Before the train departed, the staff checked every passenger's ticket. (ordinary polite past narrative, male speaker)
เธอส่งข้อความหาฉันก่อนที่จะขึ้นเครื่องค่ะ
thoe song khokhwam ha chan kon thi cha khuen khrueang kha
She messaged me before boarding the plane. (ordinary polite report, female speaker)
The departure and boarding are past in both English translations, yet จะ is natural because each was still ahead at the relevant earlier point. It is also possible to omit จะ, especially when the verb is understood as a scheduled or factual boundary: ก่อนที่ร้านปิด is heard in speech, though ก่อนที่ร้านจะปิด is the more explicit, broadly useful frame.
Do not insert จะ after หลังจากที่ merely because English uses will: the after-clause normally presents its event as the attained boundary. Future reference belongs in the main clause or comes from the larger plan.
แล้ว after the earlier event
In an after-clause, postverbal แล้ว can foreground completion before the next event. It is optional when หลังจากที่ or a completion verb such as เสร็จ already makes the sequence clear.
หลังจากที่หมอตรวจคุณแม่แล้ว พยาบาลก็พากลับไปพักค่ะ
lang chak thi mo truat khun mae laeo phayaban ko pha klap pai phak kha
After the doctor had examined my mother, the nurse took her back to rest. (ordinary polite report, female speaker; the recoverable object is omitted in the main clause)
หลังจากที่ตรวจเอกสาร ผมพบว่ามีลายเซ็นหายไปหนึ่งจุดครับ
lang chak thi truat ekkasan phom phop wa mi lai sen hai pai nueng chut khrap
After checking the documents, I found that one signature was missing. (neutral professional report, male speaker)
The second example is complete without แล้ว. Adding it would make attainment more explicit, not turn the clause into a grammatical past perfect. Conversely, progressive อยู่ is possible when an interrupted or overlapping state is intended, but that meaning clashes with an after-boundary unless a larger completed phase is understood. For aspectual scope, compare the postverbal แล้ว guide.
Clause order changes discourse focus
Both temporal clauses can precede or follow the main clause. Initial position makes the boundary a scene-setting topic; final position keeps the main assertion prominent and supplies timing afterward.
ก่อนที่ทุกคนจะกลับ ขอถ่ายรูปด้วยกันหน่อยค่ะ
kon thi thuk khon cha klap kho thai rup duai kan noi kha
Before everyone leaves, could we take a photo together? (ordinary polite request, female speaker)
กรุณาสำรองข้อมูลก่อนที่จะติดตั้งโปรแกรมครับ
karuna samrong khomun kon thi cha tit tang prokraem khrap
Please back up the data before installing the program. (formal-polite instruction, male speaker)
หลังจากที่ฝนหยุด ถนนเส้นนี้ก็กลับมาเปิดตามปกติค่ะ
lang chak thi fon yut thanon sen ni ko klap ma poet tam pakati kha
After the rain stopped, this road reopened as usual. (neutral public-information report, female speaker)
Initial หลังจากที่ฝนหยุด establishes the sequence as the organizing frame. Final ก่อนที่จะติดตั้งโปรแกรม restricts the instruction directly: the backup must precede installation. English permits similar orders, but Thai does not require a comma-like pause or an overt subject in both clauses.
Subject sharing and recoverable omission
When both events have the same understood actor, Thai commonly states that actor once. With different actors, state the subordinate subject if omission would invite the wrong reading.
| Participants | Productive slot | Example core |
|---|---|---|
phom tho ha mae kon thi cha ok chak ban khrap
I called my mother before leaving home. (ordinary polite report, male speaker; shared subject omitted in the second clause)
ก่อนที่ช่างจะมาถึง คุณช่วยย้ายรถให้หน่อยได้ไหมคะ
kon thi chang cha ma thueng khun chuai yai rot hai noi dai mai kha
Before the technician arrives, could you move the car, please? (ordinary polite request, female speaker; different subjects are explicit)
This is ordinary zero-argument behavior, not a special infinitive. English “before leaving” looks nonfinite; Thai simply omits a recoverable subject from a normal predicate.
Ordinary-polite dialogue
Two coworkers coordinate the end of a workshop.
หลังจากที่แขกกลับหมดแล้ว เราเก็บอุปกรณ์เลยไหมคะ
lang chak thi khaek klap mot laeo rao kep uppakon loei mai kha
After all the guests have left, shall we put the equipment away? (ordinary polite question, female speaker)
ได้ครับ แต่ก่อนที่ทีมไฟจะกลับ ผมขอตรวจเวทีอีกครั้งนะครับ
dai khrap tae kon thi thim fai cha klap phom kho truat wethi ik khrang na khrap
Sure, but before the lighting team leaves, I'd like to check the stage once more. (ordinary polite response, male speaker)
งั้นฉันจะแจ้งทีมงานหลังจากคุยกับคุณเสร็จค่ะ
ngan chan cha chaeng thim ngan lang chak khui kap khun set kha
Then I'll inform the team after I finish talking with you. (ordinary polite planning, female speaker)
The dialogue combines a completed boundary (กลับหมดแล้ว), a prospective one (ก่อนที่...จะกลับ), and a compact หลังจาก clause. Each form reflects viewpoint within the plan rather than tense agreement.
Common Mistakes
1. Treating จะ as a future-tense requirement
❌ หลังจากที่ช่างจะซ่อมเสร็จ เรารับรถกลับครับ
Wrong neutral sequencing—the after-clause presents repair as the attained boundary, so prospective จะ is misplaced.
✅ หลังจากที่ช่างซ่อมเสร็จแล้ว เราก็รับรถกลับครับ
lang chak thi chang som set laeo rao ko rap rot klap khrap
After the technician finished the repair, we picked the car up. (ordinary polite past report, male speaker)
2. Hiding a change of actor
❌ ก่อนที่จะถึงบ้าน แม่โทรหาผมครับ
Ambiguous for the intended ‘before I reached home’—omission encourages the listener to attach the subordinate event to Mother.
✅ ก่อนที่ผมจะถึงบ้าน แม่โทรมาถามว่าอยู่ไหนครับ
kon thi phom cha thueng ban mae tho ma tham wa yu nai khrap
Before I got home, Mother called to ask where I was. (ordinary polite report, male speaker)
3. Assuming แล้ว is obligatory past marking
❌ หลังจากที่กินข้าวแล้วเสมอ ผมจะเดินเล่นครับ
Wrong placement for intended habitual ‘always after eating’; แล้ว is not an obligatory past suffix and เสมอ should scope over the habit.
✅ หลังกินข้าว ผมจะเดินเล่นเสมอครับ
lang kin khao phom cha doen len samoe khrap
After eating, I always take a walk. (ordinary polite habitual statement, male speaker)
4. Putting ที่ before a bare time noun
❌ หลังจากที่วันหยุด เราก็กลับไปทำงานค่ะ
Incorrect—ที่ introduces a clause here, but วันหยุด is only a time noun with no predicate.
✅ หลังจากวันหยุด เราก็กลับไปทำงานค่ะ
lang chak wan yut rao ko klap pai tham ngan kha
After the holiday, we went back to work. (ordinary polite report, female speaker; หลังจาก directly precedes the time noun)
Key Takeaways
Use ก่อนที่...(จะ)... to locate one event before a still-prospective boundary and หลังจากที่...(แล้ว)... to locate it after an attained boundary. Clause order changes what frames the discourse, while subjects and aspect markers appear only when their meaning is needed. Neither จะ nor แล้ว is mechanical tense agreement.
