ขณะที่ and ระหว่างที่

Both ขณะที่ and ระหว่างที่ can correspond to English while, but they organize overlap differently. ขณะที่ sets one situation alongside another and can extend to “whereas.” ระหว่างที่ presents a bounded stretch of time within which another event occurs. This contrast matters more than finding one Thai word for English while.

Neither linker carries tense. Aspect, event type, clause order, and context determine whether the overlap is past, current, planned, or habitual.

Concurrent scenes with ขณะที่

Use ขณะที่ + clause when two situations hold at the same reference time. The construction is neutral in careful speech and common in informative writing. In very casual conversation, ตอนที่ is often more spontaneous, but ขณะที่ is not restricted to formal prose.

ขณะที่ฉันกำลังทำอาหาร ลูกก็วาดรูปอยู่ข้าง ๆ ค่ะ

khana thi chan kamlang tham ahan luk ko wat rup yu khang khang kha

While I was cooking, my child was drawing beside me. (ordinary polite scene description, female speaker)

โทรศัพท์ดังขึ้นขณะที่ผมกำลังอาบน้ำครับ

thorasap dang khuen khana thi phom kamlang ap nam khrap

The phone rang while I was taking a shower. (ordinary polite report, male speaker)

The first example aligns two ongoing activities. In the second, the bounded event ดังขึ้น occurs inside the ongoing shower. Thai can mark the background with กำลัง...อยู่, but it does not need progressive marking on every simultaneous predicate.

ขณะที่หลายบริษัทลดค่าใช้จ่าย บริษัทนี้กลับเพิ่มงบฝึกอบรม

khana thi lai borisat lot kha chai chai borisat ni klap phoem ngop fuek oprom

While many companies are cutting costs, this company is instead increasing its training budget. (formal written contrast)

Here ขณะที่ means “whereas”: it compares opposed situations rather than measuring their temporal overlap. กลับ reinforces the reversal. Context decides between the simultaneous and contrastive readings.

An interval with ระหว่างที่

ระหว่างที่ + clause introduces an interval defined by that clause. The main event occurs during some part of it. The interval clause is therefore especially natural with activities and states that can extend through time.

ระหว่างที่รอผลตรวจ กรุณานั่งพักในห้องนี้นะคะ

rawang thi ro phon truat karuna nang phak nai hong ni na kha

While you wait for the test results, please rest in this room. (formal-polite service instruction, female speaker)

มีพัสดุมาส่งระหว่างที่เราออกไปกินข้าวครับ

mi phatsadu ma song rawang thi rao ok pai kin khao khrap

A parcel was delivered while we were out eating. (ordinary polite report, male speaker)

ระหว่างที่ระบบปิดปรับปรุง ผู้ใช้จะเข้าสู่ระบบไม่ได้ค่ะ

rawang thi rabop pit prapprung phu chai cha khao su rabop mai dai kha

While the system is down for maintenance, users will not be able to log in. (formal informational notice, female speaker)

English during often precedes a noun, while Thai has a useful structural contrast: ระหว่างการประชุม “during the meeting” contains a nominal expression, but ระหว่างที่เราประชุม “while we are meeting” contains a clause. Do not insert การ before a full subject-predicate clause.

💡
Use ขณะที่ when you want the listener to compare two concurrent scenes; use ระหว่างที่ when one clause supplies the time span inside which the other event is located.

Event type and aspect

Long activities and states make good background clauses; punctual events normally make good foreground events. This is a strong discourse preference, not an absolute morphological rule.

ระหว่าง + noun-like eventการเดินทาง / การประชุมcompact “during” phrase

ระหว่างที่คุณยายหลับ พวกเราพูดกันเบา ๆ ค่ะ

rawang thi khun yai lap phuak rao phut kan bao bao kha

While Grandmother was asleep, we spoke quietly. (ordinary polite report, female speaker)

ขณะที่รถกำลังเลี้ยว เด็กคนหนึ่งก็วิ่งข้ามถนนครับ

khana thi rot kamlang liao dek khon nueng ko wing kham thanon khrap

As the car was turning, a child ran across the road. (ordinary polite incident report, male speaker)

In these examples, หลับ is already a state and does not need กำลัง. Turning is dynamically unfolding, so กำลัง is informative. Adding อยู่ after every verb would overmark the background and could make a punctual foreground event sound unnaturally stretched.

Clause order, ก็, and scope

An initial while-clause creates the temporal frame. The main clause often begins with ก็, especially in narrative, but ก็ is not an obligatory English-style correlative. A final while-clause instead modifies the preceding assertion directly.

ขณะที่ทุกคนเงียบอยู่ ไฟก็ดับลงทันทีครับ

khana thi thuk khon ngiap yu fai ko dap long thanthi khrap

While everyone was quiet, the lights suddenly went out. (ordinary polite narrative, male speaker)

อย่าใช้โทรศัพท์ระหว่างที่ขับรถนะคะ

ya chai thorasap rawang thi khap rot na kha

Do not use your phone while driving. (ordinary polite warning, female speaker)

The warning has a recoverable addressee in both predicates. Thai omits that shared subject rather than converting ขับ into an infinitive. If the actors differ, state them: อย่าโทรหาฉันระหว่างที่ฉันขับรถ “Don't call me while I'm driving.”

Scope can become ambiguous when negation appears. ไม่ได้คุยกันขณะที่ประชุม may mean that no conversation occurred during the meeting, but prosody and context can also contrast that time with another. Put the temporal frame first or add a clearer time phrase when the distinction matters.

ขณะที่ versus ตอนที่

ตอนที่ is the broad everyday “when/at the time that.” It can locate a punctual event without insisting on sustained overlap. ขณะที่ more strongly invites concurrent viewing or comparison.

ตอนที่รถเมล์มาถึง ฉันกำลังซื้อกาแฟอยู่ค่ะ

ton thi rot me ma thueng chan kamlang sue kafae yu kha

When the bus arrived, I was buying coffee. (ordinary polite narrative, female speaker)

ขณะที่ฉันซื้อกาแฟอยู่ เพื่อนก็โทรมาตามค่ะ

khana thi chan sue kafae yu phuean ko tho ma tam kha

While I was buying coffee, my friend called to hurry me along. (ordinary polite narrative, female speaker)

The first chooses arrival as a time point; the second opens the coffee-buying scene and locates the call inside it. English often uses when and while similarly, but Thai speakers select a discourse frame, not a tense conjunction.

💡
Progressive marking is optional when overlap is already obvious. Add กำลัง or อยู่ to profile an event's internal unfolding, not merely because English uses was -ing.

Ordinary-polite dialogue

Two colleagues arrange cover during lunch.

ระหว่างที่ฉันออกไปกินข้าว คุณช่วยรับโทรศัพท์แทนได้ไหมคะ

rawang thi chan ok pai kin khao khun chuai rap thorasap thaen dai mai kha

While I'm out for lunch, could you answer the phone for me? (ordinary polite request, female speaker)

ได้ครับ ขณะที่คุณไม่อยู่ ผมจะจดชื่อกับเบอร์ไว้ให้ครับ

dai khrap khana thi khun mai yu phom cha chot chue kap boe wai hai khrap

Certainly. While you're away, I'll write down each caller's name and number for you. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker)

ขอบคุณค่ะ ถ้ามีพัสดุมาส่งระหว่างนั้น ฝากรับไว้ด้วยนะคะ

khopkhun kha tha mi phatsadu ma song rawang nan fak rap wai duai na kha

Thank you. If a parcel arrives during that time, please accept it too. (ordinary polite request, female speaker)

ระหว่างนั้น in the last turn is not a clause linker; it refers back to an already established interval. This avoids repeating the full lunch clause.

Common Mistakes

1. Inserting aspect markers in English order

❌ ระหว่างที่คุณยายอยู่กำลังหลับ พวกเราพูดเบา ๆ ค่ะ

Incorrect aspect order—อยู่ cannot stand before กำลัง as an English-style form of ‘was.’

✅ ระหว่างที่คุณยายหลับอยู่ พวกเราคุยกันเบา ๆ ค่ะ

rawang thi khun yai lap yu phuak rao khui kan bao bao kha

While Grandmother was asleep, we talked quietly. (ordinary polite report, female speaker; the state needs no กำลัง, though the full order would be กำลังหลับอยู่)

2. Using ระหว่างที่ directly before a noun phrase

❌ ระหว่างที่การอบรม ปิดเสียงโทรศัพท์ด้วยค่ะ

Incorrect mixture—ที่ introduces a clause, while การอบรม is a nominalized event.

✅ ระหว่างการอบรม กรุณาปิดเสียงโทรศัพท์ด้วยค่ะ

rawang kan oprom karuna pit siang thorasap duai kha

During the training session, please silence your phone. (formal-polite instruction, female speaker)

3. Omitting a necessary different subject

❌ อย่าโทรมาระหว่างที่ขับรถนะครับ

Ambiguous for intended ‘while I am driving’—without a subject, the warning naturally risks being understood as ‘while you are driving.’

✅ อย่าโทรมาระหว่างที่ผมขับรถนะครับ

ya tho ma rawang thi phom khap rot na khrap

Please don't call while I'm driving. (ordinary polite warning, male speaker)

4. Forcing simultaneous ขณะที่ onto simple sequence

❌ ขณะที่ประชุมจบ ทุกคนก็กลับบ้านค่ะ

Unnatural for intended ‘after the meeting ended’—the two events are sequential, not overlapping.

✅ หลังจากประชุมจบ ทุกคนก็แยกย้ายกลับบ้านค่ะ

lang chak prachum chop thuk khon ko yaek yai klap ban kha

After the meeting ended, everyone headed home separately. (ordinary polite report, female speaker)

Key Takeaways

Choose ขณะที่ to align or contrast two scenes and ระหว่างที่ to place an event inside a defined interval. Initial clauses frame the discourse, final clauses narrow the preceding event, ก็ is optional, and subjects or progressive markers appear only when they resolve a real interpretive need.
