Thai stative predicates describe knowledge, possession, preference, emotion, location, bodily condition, or a property without needing English be: ผมรู้, ฉันชอบ, เขามีรถ, ห้องเงียบ. Because a stable state has no inherent unfolding stages, it does not combine with aspect exactly like an activity. Markers remain possible, but each one selects a coherent view of the state—its continuation, onset, former validity, future relevance, or gradual change.
The central question is therefore not “which tense does this adjective take?” Thai property words and many English adjective-like meanings are predicates in their own right. See property predication without a copula for that foundation.
Bare states are complete clauses
A bare stative predicate can describe a current condition, a general characteristic, or a state anchored elsewhere in discourse. It does not lack a present-tense copula.
| View of state | Productive frame | Natural model | Interpretation |
|---|---|---|---|
| unmarked state | subject + state | ห้องเงียบ | room is/was quiet in context |
| continuing state | ยัง + state + อยู่ | ประตูยังเปิดอยู่ | open state persists |
| newly attained state | state + แล้ว | ฉันเข้าใจแล้ว | understanding now established |
| former experience/state | เคย + state | เขาเคยอยู่เชียงใหม่ | state held in an earlier interval |
| prospective state | time + state, or จะ + state | พรุ่งนี้ผมว่าง | state at projected time |
| developing state | กำลัง + change predicate | อาการกำลังดีขึ้น | change along a scale unfolds |
ห้องประชุมเงียบมากค่ะ เหมาะกับการสัมภาษณ์
hong prachum ngiap mak kha mo kap kan samphat
The meeting room is very quiet and suitable for interviews. (ordinary polite workplace speech, female speaker; bare property predicates)
เมื่อก่อนถนนเส้นนี้แคบครับ ตอนนี้กว้างขึ้นมาก
muea kon thanon sen ni khaep khrap ton ni kwang khuen mak
This road used to be narrow; now it is much wider. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker; time phrases anchor unchanged properties)
พรุ่งนี้ช่วงบ่ายฉันว่างค่ะ โทรมาได้เลย
phrung ni chuang bai chan wang kha tho ma dai loei
I'm free tomorrow afternoon; feel free to call. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker; projected state without required จะ)
English requires is, was, or will be. Thai uses the same stative forms เงียบ, แคบ, กว้าง, and ว่าง, with discourse and time phrases supplying temporal location.
อยู่ and ยัง maintain a state
Postpredicate อยู่ can hold a state at the reference time. ยัง adds persistence against an expectation that the state might change. The full frame ยัง + state + อยู่ is common, but neither edge is compulsory in every context.
ประตูทางออกยังเปิดอยู่ครับ
pratu thang ok yang poet yu khrap
The exit door is still open. (ordinary polite report, male speaker; continuing resultant state)
ฉันยังเป็นห่วงคุณแม่อยู่ค่ะ
chan yang pen huang khun mae yu kha
I'm still worried about my mother. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker; emotional state persists)
ตอนที่ช่างมาถึง ไฟในห้องดับอยู่ครับ
ton thi chang ma thueng fai nai hong dap yu khrap
When the technician arrived, the lights in the room were off. (ordinary polite past narrative, male speaker; state held at a past reference point)
อยู่ does not mean present tense. The arrival clause in the third example supplies a past reference point. Nor does เป็น in the lexicalized predicate เป็นห่วง function as a freely inserted copula before every emotion or property.
แล้ว presents entry or changed relevance
With a state, final แล้ว often says that the state now holds after an earlier alternative: รู้แล้ว “now know,” พร้อมแล้ว “now ready,” หิวแล้ว “have become hungry.” It need not mean that the state has ended.
ตอนนี้ผมเข้าใจขั้นตอนแล้วครับ
ton ni phom khao chai khanton laeo khrap
Now I understand the procedure. (ordinary polite workplace speech, male speaker; understanding newly established)
เด็กหิวแล้วค่ะ ขออาหารว่างหน่อยนะคะ
dek hio laeo kha kho ahan wang noi na kha
The child is hungry now; could we have a snack, please? (ordinary polite request, female speaker; entry into bodily state)
ห้องพร้อมแล้วครับ เริ่มประชุมได้เลย
hong phrom laeo khrap roem prachum dai loei
The room is ready now; the meeting can start. (ordinary polite workplace announcement, male speaker)
Compare ห้องพร้อม as a neutral state description with ห้องพร้อมแล้ว as a transition relevant to starting the meeting. The change-of-state แล้ว page develops this contrast.
กำลัง requires an unfolding construal
Stable knowledge or possession normally lacks internal stages, so กำลังรู้คำตอบ and กำลังมีรถหนึ่งคัน are not neutral equivalents of “currently know” and “currently have.” กำลัง becomes natural when the predicate describes change, active mental work, or entry into a state.
ยอดขายกำลังสูงขึ้นอย่างต่อเนื่องค่ะ
yot khai kamlang sung khuen yang tonueang kha
Sales are rising steadily. (formal-neutral workplace report, female voice; scalar change unfolding)
ผมกำลังเริ่มเข้าใจสาเหตุแล้วครับ
phom kamlang roem khao chai sahet laeo khrap
I'm beginning to understand the cause now. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker; onset of understanding)
ทีมกำลังคิดหาวิธีลดเวลารอค่ะ
thim kamlang khit ha withi lot wela ro kha
The team is thinking of a way to reduce waiting time. (ordinary polite workplace report, female speaker; active deliberation rather than a held opinion)
This is construction-sensitive. คิดว่าแพง “think that it is expensive” can present an opinion; กำลังคิดหาวิธี presents an unfolding cognitive activity. The dedicated statives with กำลัง page treats further coercion patterns.
Be careful with กำลังดี. In น้ำอุ่นกำลังดี, the string means “the warm water is just right”; กำลัง is a degree expression, not progressive aspect.
เคย, จะ, and มา locate wider state histories
Experiential เคย says a state held in an earlier interval. It can suggest contrast with now, but context decides whether the state ended. จะ projects a state or prediction. Continuative มา traces a state through an interval.
ผมเคยชอบกาแฟหวานครับ แต่ตอนนี้ดื่มไม่ใส่น้ำตาล
phom khoei chop kafae wan khrap tae ton ni duem mai sai namtan
I used to like sweet coffee, but now I drink it without sugar. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker; explicit contrast closes the former preference)
ถ้าอ่านตัวอย่างนี้ คุณจะเข้าใจง่ายขึ้นค่ะ
tha an tua yang ni khun cha khao chai ngai khuen kha
If you read this example, you'll understand more easily. (ordinary polite explanation, female speaker; projected state)
เรารู้จักครอบครัวนี้มานานกว่าสิบปีแล้วครับ
rao ru chak khropkhrua ni ma nan kwa sip pi laeo khrap
We've known this family for more than ten years. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker; state traced toward now)
The lexical predicate remains unchanged across former, prospective, and continuative frames. English tense and aspect choices are translations of the whole construction.
Negation preserves scope contrasts
ยังไม่ + state says the expected state has not begun; ไม่ + state + แล้ว can say a former state no longer holds. They are not interchangeable.
ฉันยังไม่พร้อมค่ะ ขอเวลาอีกห้านาที
chan yang mai phrom kha kho wela ik ha nathi
I'm not ready yet; please give me another five minutes. (ordinary polite request, female speaker)
ผมไม่หิวแล้วครับ กินอะไรมาระหว่างทาง
phom mai hio laeo khrap kin arai ma rawang thang
I'm not hungry anymore; I ate something on the way. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker; former hunger no longer holds)
English auxiliary order does not determine the Thai position. ยัง precedes the negative state, while แล้ว follows the whole state change.
Ordinary-polite dialogue
ตอนนี้เข้าใจวิธีใช้ระบบหรือยังคะ
ton ni khao chai withi chai rabop rue yang kha
Do you understand how to use the system now? (ordinary polite question, female speaker)
เข้าใจมากขึ้นแล้วครับ แต่ยังไม่คล่อง
khao chai mak khuen laeo khrap tae yang mai khlong
I understand it better now, but I'm not fluent with it yet. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker)
ส่วนไหนยังยากอยู่คะ
suan nai yang yak yu kha
Which part is still difficult? (ordinary polite follow-up, female speaker)
ขั้นตอนส่งไฟล์ยังซับซ้อนอยู่ครับ
khanton song fai yang sapson yu khrap
The file-submission steps are still complicated. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker)
Common Mistakes
1. Adding กำลัง to stable knowledge
❌ ตอนนี้ผมกำลังรู้คำตอบข้อนี้ครับ
Incorrect neutral Thai—knowing the answer is a state, not an unfolding activity.
✅ ตอนนี้ผมรู้คำตอบข้อนี้แล้วครับ
ton ni phom ru kham top kho ni laeo khrap
Now I know the answer to this question. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker; knowledge newly established)
2. Inserting เป็น before an ordinary property
❌ ห้องด้านในเป็นเงียบกว่าค่ะ
Incorrect English-style copular transfer—เงียบ directly predicates the comparison.
✅ ห้องด้านในเงียบกว่าค่ะ
hong dan nai ngiap kwa kha
The inner room is quieter. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker)
3. Using แล้ว as a general past-state marker
❌ เมื่อวานอากาศร้อนแล้วครับ
Wrong for the intended background ‘the weather was hot yesterday’; แล้ว suggests a change or attained relevance.
✅ เมื่อวานอากาศร้อนมากครับ
muea wan akat ron mak khrap
The weather was very hot yesterday. (ordinary polite report, male speaker; time adverb anchors the bare state)
4. Moving negation after a knowledge predicate
❌ ฉันรู้ไม่คำตอบค่ะ
Incorrect—ไม่ precedes the denied predicate and cannot split รู้ from its content this way.
✅ ฉันยังไม่รู้คำตอบค่ะ กำลังรอผลอยู่
chan yang mai ru kham top kha kamlang ro phon yu
I don't know the answer yet; I'm waiting for the result. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker)
Key Takeaways
- Bare Thai states are full predicates and receive time from discourse without a copula or tense ending.
- ยัง...อยู่ maintains a state; state + แล้ว commonly presents entry into a new state.
- กำลัง needs an unfolding process or change, not mere present relevance.
- เคย, จะ, and continuative มา place states within former, projected, or extended intervals.
- Negation order reflects scope: ยังไม่พร้อม and ไม่หิวแล้ว describe different state histories.
