เคย for Prior Experience

Preverbal เคย presents a situation as part of someone's experience before the relevant reference point. In เคยไปเชียงใหม่, the issue is not when one particular trip occurred but whether going to Chiang Mai belongs to the person's prior experience. This makes เคย resemble English have ever, have ... before, or sometimes used to, but it is not a past-tense conjugation.

The marker is neutral in everyday conversation and writing. It works with one-time experiences, repeated former activities, and earlier states. Context decides which English rendering sounds best; the Thai predicate itself remains unchanged.

The productive preverbal position

The core frame is subject/topic + เคย + predicate phrase. The verb, object, direction, and close complements remain together after เคย.

Productive slotPredicate substitutedNatural frameLikely reading
subject + เคย + [predicate]ไปกระบี่เขาเคยไปกระบี่has been to Krabi before
ลองทำอาหารญี่ปุ่นเขาเคยลองทำอาหารญี่ปุ่นhas tried making Japanese food
ทำงานกลางคืนเขาเคยทำงานกลางคืนformerly worked nights
อยู่เชียงรายเขาเคยอยู่เชียงรายused to live in Chiang Rai
ไม่กินเนื้อเขาเคยไม่กินเนื้อformerly did not eat meat

ฉันเคยไปเที่ยวกระบี่กับเพื่อนค่ะ

chan khoei pai thiao krabi kap phuean kha

I've traveled to Krabi with friends before. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker; prior experience)

คุณพ่อเคยทำงานกะดึกครับ

khun pho khoei tham ngan ka duek khrap

Dad used to work the night shift. (ordinary polite report, male speaker; former repeated activity)

ตอนเด็กผมเคยกลัวสุนัขมากครับ

ton dek phom khoei klua sunak mak khrap

When I was a child, I used to be very afraid of dogs. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker; former state)

English changes between have been, used to work, and used to be afraid. Thai uses the same invariant เคย + predicate frame because all three situations are viewed as belonging to an earlier experiential domain.

💡
Do not choose an English tense first and work backward. Ask whether the speaker is presenting the situation as something previously experienced; if so, preverbal เคย is a likely choice.

Experience is not the same as a dated past event

เคย is most useful when prior occurrence itself is relevant: someone has tried a food, visited a place, met a person, or lived through a situation. A plain time expression is usually enough when reporting one identified event.

คุณเคยลองนั่งรถไฟไปเชียงใหม่ไหมคะ

khun khoei long nang rot fai pai chiang mai mai kha

Have you ever tried taking the train to Chiang Mai? (ordinary polite question, female speaker)

เมื่อวานผมนั่งรถไฟกลับกรุงเทพฯ ครับ

muea wan phom nang rot fai klap krung thep khrap

Yesterday I took the train back to Bangkok. (ordinary polite report, male speaker; one dated event, so no เคย is needed)

ฉันเคยเจอคุณหมอท่านนี้เมื่อสองปีก่อนค่ะ

chan khoei choe khun mo than ni muea song pi kon kha

I met this doctor once two years ago. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker; a dated occasion can still be framed as relevant prior experience)

The third example shows that เคย does not forbid a definite time phrase. The speaker can identify when the experience occurred while still presenting it as part of an experiential record. What is misleading is adding เคย mechanically to every past sentence.

เคย for a former habit or state

With durative predicates, เคย often gives a former-habit or former-state reading: เคยทำงานที่นี่, เคยอยู่ต่างจังหวัด, เคยชอบกาแฟ. It commonly suggests a contrast with the present, but the contrast is a conversational inference rather than an automatic grammatical entailment. Add an explicit present clause when the change matters.

พี่สาวเคยอยู่ภูเก็ตหลายปีค่ะ

phi sao khoei yu phuket lai pi kha

My older sister lived in Phuket for several years. (ordinary polite report, female speaker; former residence)

เมื่อก่อนผมเคยดื่มกาแฟทุกเช้า แต่ตอนนี้เลิกแล้วครับ

muea kon phom khoei duem kafae thuk chao tae ton ni loek laeo khrap

I used to drink coffee every morning, but I've stopped now. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker; explicit present contrast)

เธอเคยชอบงานนี้มากค่ะ และตอนนี้ก็ยังชอบอยู่

thoe khoei chop ngan ni mak kha lae ton ni ko yang chop yu

She liked this job very much before, and she still likes it now. (ordinary polite report, female speaker; เคย alone did not entail that the liking ended)

In เคยอยู่ภูเก็ตหลายปี, เคย marks prior experience while อยู่ is the lexical verb “live.” The duration หลายปี measures that former residence; no progressive marker is required.

💡
Former-state เคย often invites “not now,” but it does not guarantee it. If continuation or change matters, say ยัง...อยู่ “still...” or แต่ตอนนี้...แล้ว “but now...” explicitly.

Questions, negatives, and short answers

The ordinary experience question is เคย + predicate + ไหม. A natural short answer repeats เคย or uses ไม่เคย. The negative precedes the experience marker: ไม่เคย + predicate means that no relevant occasion exists in the person's experience.

คุณเคยกินอาหารใต้รสเผ็ดจัดไหมคะ

khun khoei kin ahan tai rot phet chat mai kha

Have you ever eaten very spicy southern Thai food? (ordinary polite question, female speaker)

เคยครับ แต่กินได้นิดเดียว

khoei khrap tae kin dai nit diao

Yes, but I could eat only a little. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker)

ผมไม่เคยขับรถทางไกลคนเดียวครับ

phom mai khoei khap rot thang klai khon diao khrap

I've never driven a long distance alone. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker)

ยังไม่เคย adds “not yet”: the experience has not occurred up to the reference point, while a future occurrence remains relevant or expected.

ฉันยังไม่เคยไปดูคอนเสิร์ตคนเดียวค่ะ

chan yang mai khoei pai du khoensoet khon diao kha

I haven't gone to a concert alone yet. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker; possibility remains open)

The dedicated ยังไม่ page develops the “not yet” perspective, while temporal adverbs locate particular occasions.

Interaction with แล้ว and อยู่

เคย...มาก่อน explicitly means “have ... before.” เคย...แล้ว can present an experience as already established, especially when declining a repeat or correcting an assumption. It does not mean that เคย and แล้ว jointly conjugate the verb.

ร้านนั้นฉันเคยไปแล้วค่ะ คราวนี้ลองร้านใหม่กันไหมคะ

ran nan chan khoei pai laeo kha khrao ni long ran mai kan mai kha

I've already been to that restaurant; shall we try a new one this time? (ordinary polite speech, female speaker; experience already established)

With progressive อยู่, avoid mechanically stacking markers. A past ongoing scene normally uses a time clause plus กำลัง...อยู่, not เคย merely because the scene is earlier. เคย can, however, precede lexical อยู่ in เคยอยู่เชียงใหม่ “used to live in Chiang Mai.”

ตอนคุณโทรมา ผมกำลังขับรถอยู่ครับ

ton khun tho ma phom kamlang khap rot yu khrap

When you called, I was driving. (ordinary polite narrative, male speaker; a particular past ongoing scene, not experiential เคย)

Ordinary-polite dialogue

คุณเคยมาร้านนี้ไหมคะ

khun khoei ma ran ni mai kha

Have you been to this restaurant before? (ordinary polite question, female speaker)

ยังไม่เคยครับ เพื่อนเพิ่งแนะนำเมื่อวาน

yang mai khoei khrap phuean phoeng naenam muea wan

Not yet. A friend just recommended it yesterday. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker)

ฉันเคยมากับครอบครัวครั้งหนึ่งค่ะ อาหารทะเลอร่อยมาก

chan khoei ma kap khropkhrua khrang nueng kha ahan thale aroi mak

I came once with my family; the seafood was excellent. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker)

งั้นช่วยแนะนำเมนูให้หน่อยนะครับ

ngan chuai naenam menu hai noi na khrap

Then please recommend a dish for me. (ordinary polite request, male speaker)

Common Mistakes

1. Putting เคย after the event

❌ ฉันไปเคยเชียงใหม่ค่ะ

Incorrect—experiential เคย precedes the complete event phrase.

✅ ฉันเคยไปเชียงใหม่ช่วงหน้าหนาวค่ะ

chan khoei pai chiang mai chuang na nao kha

I've been to Chiang Mai during the cool season. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker)

2. Adding เคย to every dated past report

❌ เมื่อเช้าผมเคยลืมกุญแจไว้ที่บ้านครับ

Wrong for the intended report of one event this morning—เคย unnecessarily reframes it as prior experience.

✅ เมื่อเช้าผมลืมกุญแจไว้ที่บ้านครับ

muea chao phom luem kunchae wai thi ban khrap

This morning I left my keys at home. (ordinary polite report, male speaker)

3. Negating the event instead of the experience

❌ ฉันเคยไม่กินทุเรียนค่ะ

Wrong for ‘I have never eaten durian’; this means that not eating durian was a former situation.

✅ ฉันไม่เคยกินทุเรียนค่ะ

chan mai khoei kin thurian kha

I've never eaten durian. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker)

4. Assuming เคย always means “no longer”

❌ เขาเคยทำงานที่นี่ครับ แปลว่าตอนนี้เขาไม่ทำแล้ว

Incorrect inference—เคย can suggest a former situation, but ending is not entailed without context.

✅ เขาเคยทำงานที่นี่ครับ และตอนนี้ก็ยังทำอยู่

khao khoei tham ngan thi ni khrap lae ton ni ko yang tham yu

He worked here before, and he still does now. (ordinary polite report, male speaker)

Key Takeaways

  • เคย + predicate places a situation in prior experience; it does not inflect the verb for past tense.
  • One-time experience, former habit, and former state are distinguished by predicate meaning and context.
  • ไม่เคย means “never,” while ยังไม่เคย means “not yet ever.”
  • A dated past event normally needs only its time anchor, though เคย may remain when experiential relevance is intended.
  • A former reading often suggests present contrast, but continuation or ending must be stated when it matters.
