Preverbal ยัง says that a situation continues to hold at the reference point. เขายังทำงาน means that he is still working or still works: the relevant earlier situation has not changed. When ยัง precedes a negative predicate in ยังไม่ทำ, the continuing situation is not doing, which produces the English reading “has not done yet.”
This single continuative logic is more useful than memorizing two unrelated translations. ยัง itself is not a present-tense marker and is not inherently negative. The predicate and the reference point determine whether English uses still, yet, was still, or will still.
The productive position before the predicate
The core pattern is subject/topic + ยัง + predicate phrase. ยัง normally precedes the verb, property predicate, modal, or negated phrase whose validity continues.
| Productive slot | Predicate substituted | Natural result | Continuing situation |
|---|---|---|---|
| subject + ยัง + [predicate] | ทำงาน | เขายังทำงาน | he still works/is working |
| อยู่ที่บริษัท | เขายังอยู่ที่บริษัท | he is still at the office | |
| เหนื่อย | เขายังเหนื่อย | he is still tired | |
| ต้องรอ | เขายังต้องรอ | he still has to wait | |
| ไม่พร้อม | เขายังไม่พร้อม | he is not ready yet | |
| ไม่ได้ส่ง | เขายังไม่ได้ส่ง | he has not sent it yet |
คุณแม่ยังทำงานอยู่ค่ะ เดี๋ยวจะโทรกลับ
khun mae yang tham ngan yu kha diao cha tho klap
Mother is still working; she'll call back shortly. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker; activity continues)
ร้านเดิมยังเปิดครับ แต่ย้ายไปอีกฝั่งถนนแล้ว
ran doem yang poet khrap tae yai pai ik fang thanon laeo
The same shop is still open, but it has moved to the other side of the road. (ordinary polite report, male speaker; continued operation contrasts with changed location)
อาการเจ็บคอยังไม่ดีขึ้นค่ะ
akan chep kho yang mai di khuen kha
The sore throat hasn't improved yet. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker; the absence of improvement continues)
English puts still before some predicates but yet at the end of a negative clause. Thai keeps ยัง before the relevant predicate in both cases. That position reveals their shared viewpoint.
ยัง with activities, states, and modals
Unlike the progressive marker กำลัง, ยัง does not require an event with visible internal stages. An activity can continue, but so can a state, possession, obligation, wish, or ability. This is why ยังรู้, ยังมี, ยังต้อง, and ยังอยาก are natural.
ผมยังจำรหัสผ่านเก่าได้ครับ
phom yang cham rahat phan kao dai khrap
I can still remember the old password. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker; memory remains available)
ในตู้เย็นยังมีนมเหลืออยู่ค่ะ
nai tu yen yang mi nom luea yu kha
There is still some milk left in the refrigerator. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker; continued existence)
พรุ่งนี้เรายังต้องมาทำงานตามปกติครับ
phrung ni rao yang tong ma tham ngan tam pakati khrap
Tomorrow we still have to come to work as usual. (ordinary polite workplace speech, male speaker; obligation persists at a future reference point)
ถึงฝนจะตก เธอก็ยังอยากไปตลาดค่ะ
thueng fon cha tok thoe ko yang yak pai talat kha
Even though it's raining, she still wants to go to the market. (ordinary polite report, female speaker; desire persists despite a counterexpectation)
The last example also has a concessive pattern ถึง...ก็ยัง.... It remains neutral, but its full discourse structure belongs with complex clauses. Here the important point is that ยัง preserves the desire against an expectation that rain would cancel it.
ยัง...อยู่ makes continuation explicit
Postpredicate อยู่ presents a situation as holding at the reference point. Adding ยัง explicitly connects that situation to an earlier phase: ยังทำงานอยู่, ยังเปิดอยู่, ยังไม่สบายอยู่. อยู่ is not obligatory after every ยัง.
ตอนนี้ช่างยังซ่อมเครื่องอยู่ครับ
ton ni chang yang som khrueang yu khrap
The technician is still repairing the machine. (ordinary polite report, male speaker; continuing activity)
ประตูด้านหลังยังล็อกอยู่ค่ะ
pratu dan lang yang lok yu kha
The back door is still locked. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker; maintained state)
ผมยังไออยู่นิดหน่อยครับ
phom yang ai yu nit noi khrap
I'm still coughing a little. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker; intermittent condition continues)
In a visible or well-established context, ยังซ่อมครับ may be enough. Adding อยู่ foregrounds the situation's holding at that point. The postpredicate อยู่ page explains the distinction in depth.
The reference point can move
Unanchored ยัง is normally interpreted relative to now, but an earlier or projected frame relocates it. The marker is therefore not equivalent to English present-tense still.
ตอนผมออกจากบ้าน ฝนยังตกอยู่ครับ
ton phom ok chak ban fon yang tok yu khrap
When I left home, it was still raining. (ordinary polite narrative, male speaker; continuation at a past reference point)
อีกสองชั่วโมงร้านก็คงยังเปิดอยู่ค่ะ
ik song chua mong ran ko khong yang poet yu kha
The shop will probably still be open in two hours. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker; continuation at a projected reference point)
เมื่อปีที่แล้วคุณยายยังเดินเองได้ครับ
muea pi thi laeo khun yai yang doen eng dai khrap
Last year Grandma could still walk by herself. (ordinary polite report, male speaker; past ability that remained then)
Time comes from ตอนผมออกจากบ้าน, อีกสองชั่วโมง, and เมื่อปีที่แล้ว. ยัง contributes persistence relative to those points.
ยัง P, ยังไม่ P, and ไม่ P แล้ว
These patterns point in different directions:
| Pattern | Temporal perspective | Model |
|---|---|---|
| ยัง P | P held before and continues | ยังเปิด “still open” |
| ยังไม่ P | non-P continues; P remains expected/relevant | ยังไม่เปิด “not open yet” |
| ไม่ P แล้ว | P held or was expected, but no longer holds | ไม่เปิดแล้ว “not open anymore” |
| P แล้ว | P is now attained or newly relevant | เปิดแล้ว “open now/has opened” |
ห้องประชุมยังว่างอยู่ค่ะ
hong prachum yang wang yu kha
The meeting room is still free. (ordinary polite workplace speech, female speaker)
ห้องประชุมยังไม่ว่างครับ รออีกสิบนาทีนะครับ
hong prachum yang mai wang khrap ro ik sip nathi na khrap
The meeting room isn't free yet; please wait another ten minutes. (ordinary polite workplace speech, male speaker)
ห้องประชุมไม่ว่างแล้วค่ะ มีอีกทีมจองต่อ
hong prachum mai wang laeo kha mi ik thim chong to
The meeting room isn't free anymore; another team has booked it next. (ordinary polite workplace speech, female speaker)
The sentence-final แล้ว page develops the reversal in ไม่ P แล้ว. The next page treats ยังไม่ as a full construction.
Questions and short answers
Completion questions commonly end in แล้วหรือยัง or simply หรือยัง: the speaker asks whether the expected event is attained or whether nonoccurrence still holds. A short ยังครับ/ค่ะ answers “not yet” because the omitted negative event is recoverable from that question. Outside such a context, ยัง by itself does not mean “no.”
รถรับส่งมาถึงหรือยังคะ
rot rap song ma thueng rue yang kha
Has the shuttle arrived yet? (ordinary polite question, female speaker)
ยังครับ คนขับบอกว่าอีกประมาณห้านาที
yang khrap khon khap bok wa ik praman ha nathi
Not yet. The driver said about five more minutes. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker; the omitted negative proposition is recoverable)
The compressed มาถึงยัง is common (informal) in conversation, but มาถึงหรือยัง is the safer neutral-polite model.
Ordinary-polite dialogue
คุณยังใช้ห้องเล็กอยู่ไหมคะ
khun yang chai hong lek yu mai kha
Are you still using the small room? (ordinary polite question, female speaker)
ยังใช้อยู่ครับ ประชุมยังไม่เสร็จ
yang chai yu khrap prachum yang mai set
Yes, we are. The meeting isn't finished yet. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker)
ถ้าเสร็จแล้วช่วยบอกด้วยนะคะ
tha set laeo chuai bok duai na kha
Please let me know when you're finished. (ordinary polite request, female speaker)
ได้ครับ น่าจะอีกไม่เกินครึ่งชั่วโมง
dai khrap na cha ik mai koen khrueng chua mong
Certainly. It should be no more than another half hour. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker)
Common Mistakes
1. Moving declarative ยัง after the predicate
❌ เขาทำงานยังที่บริษัทครับ
Incorrect for ‘he still works at the company’; continuative ยัง precedes the predicate.
✅ เขายังทำงานที่บริษัทเดิมครับ
khao yang tham ngan thi borisat doem khrap
He still works at the same company. (ordinary polite report, male speaker)
2. Treating ยัง as inherently negative
❌ ฉันยังส่งรายงานค่ะ
Wrong for the intended ‘I haven't sent the report yet’; bare ยัง preserves the positive event rather than negating it.
✅ ฉันยังไม่ได้ส่งรายงานค่ะ
chan yang mai dai song raingan kha
I haven't sent the report yet. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker)
3. Confusing not yet with no longer
❌ ร้านยังไม่เปิดแล้วครับ
Conflicting for the intended simple meaning ‘the shop isn't open yet’; ยังไม่ and clause-final แล้ว point in opposing default directions.
✅ ร้านยังไม่เปิดครับ น่าจะเปิดสิบโมง
ran yang mai poet khrap na cha poet sip mong
The shop isn't open yet; it should open at ten. (ordinary polite report, male speaker)
4. Assuming อยู่ is required after every ยัง
❌ เราต้องเติมอยู่หลังยังทุกประโยคค่ะ
Incorrect claim—many predicates are complete and natural with ยัง alone.
✅ เรายังมีเวลาอีกยี่สิบนาทีค่ะ
rao yang mi wela ik yi sip nathi kha
We still have another twenty minutes. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker; no อยู่ required)
Key Takeaways
- Preverbal ยัง preserves an earlier situation at the chosen reference point.
- Positive ยัง P means “still P”; negative ยังไม่ P means “not P yet.”
- Activities, states, possession, and modality can all continue, so ยัง is broader than a progressive marker.
- ยัง...อยู่ makes maintained continuation explicit, but อยู่ is not obligatory.
- Short-answer ยัง means “not yet” only when a question makes the omitted proposition recoverable.
