At the end of a proposition, แล้ว signals that the described situation now holds relative to a contrasting earlier state or expectation. หิวแล้ว means “be hungry now” after not being hungry; ไม่หิวแล้ว means “not be hungry anymore” after being hungry. No act of “hungering” has been completed—the whole state has changed.
This clause-level use is neutral in everyday speech and writing. It is closely related to the event-attainment use of แล้ว, and short clauses can support both readings. The practical question is therefore one of scope: does แล้ว present a prior event as attained, or does it present the whole proposition as the new relevant situation?
The productive clause-final slot
The basic frame is [proposition] + แล้ว (+ final particle). Politeness and question particles follow แล้ว. The new proposition can be positive, negative, stative, or eventive.
| Productive proposition slot | Natural result | Earlier contrast inferred |
|---|---|---|
| หิว | หิวแล้ว | was not hungry |
| พร้อม | พร้อมแล้ว | was not ready |
| มืด | มืดแล้ว | was not dark |
| ไม่ใช้ห้องนี้ | ไม่ใช้ห้องนี้แล้ว | used it before / previously planned to |
| ไม่ต้องรอ | ไม่ต้องรอแล้ว | waiting was previously necessary |
ฉันหิวแล้วค่ะ แวะกินอะไรก่อนไหมคะ
chan hio laeo kha wae kin arai kon mai kha
I'm hungry now. Shall we stop to eat something first? (ordinary polite speech, female speaker; change into hunger)
ห้องประชุมพร้อมแล้วครับ เชิญเข้าได้เลย
hong prachum phrom laeo khrap choen khao dai loei
The meeting room is ready now; please go in. (ordinary polite announcement, male speaker; new ready state)
ข้างนอกมืดแล้วค่ะ กลับบ้านกันเถอะ
khang nok muet laeo kha klap ban kan thoe
It's dark outside now; let's go home. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker; environmental change)
English often adds now, already, or anymore, or changes tense. Thai keeps หิว, พร้อม, and มืด unchanged and lets sentence-final แล้ว relate the new situation to an earlier alternative.
Positive changes and negative changes
With a positive state, แล้ว commonly marks entry into that state: เข้าใจแล้ว “understand now,” ดีขึ้นแล้ว “is better now,” โตแล้ว “has grown up/is grown now.” With negation before the predicate, ไม่...แล้ว reverses the direction: the positive situation held or was expected before, but no longer does.
ตอนนี้คุณตาเดินได้แล้วครับ
ton ni khun ta doen dai laeo khrap
Grandfather can walk now. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker; newly attained ability)
ฉันเข้าใจวิธีใช้เครื่องแล้วค่ะ
chan khao chai withi chai khrueang laeo kha
I understand how to use the machine now. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker; change into understanding)
เขาไม่ทำงานที่นี่แล้วครับ
khao mai tham ngan thi ni laeo khrap
He doesn't work here anymore. (ordinary polite report, male speaker; earlier employment has ended)
เราไม่ต้องจองล่วงหน้าแล้วค่ะ
rao mai tong chong luang na laeo kha
We don't have to book in advance anymore. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker; previous necessity removed)
The order matters. ยังไม่พร้อม means “not ready yet”: the expected positive state has not arrived. ไม่พร้อมแล้ว means “not ready anymore”: readiness held or was expected but has been lost. The contrast is temporal and presuppositional, not merely a different translation of negation.
อาหารยังไม่พร้อมค่ะ
ahan yang mai phrom kha
The food isn't ready yet. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker; expected state not reached)
ตอนนี้ครัวไม่พร้อมแล้วครับ เพราะไฟดับ
ton ni khrua mai phrom laeo khrap phro fai dap
The kitchen isn't ready for use anymore because the power is out. (ordinary polite report, male speaker; readiness has changed)
Change is relative to a reference point, not always now
In an unanchored utterance, the new state normally matters at speech time. A narrative or future-time expression can relocate the reference point.
ตอนที่ผมกลับถึงบ้าน ลูกหลับแล้วครับ
ton thi phom klap thueng ban luk lap laeo khrap
When I got home, my child was already asleep. (ordinary polite narrative, male speaker; sleep state established at a past reference point)
พรุ่งนี้เวลานี้งานคงเลิกแล้วค่ะ
phrung ni wela ni ngan khong loek laeo kha
By this time tomorrow, the event will probably be over. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker; changed situation at a projected reference point)
ตอนผมย้ายมา ถนนยังแคบ แต่สองปีต่อมาก็ขยายถนนเสร็จแล้วครับ
ton phom yai ma thanon yang khaep tae song pi to ma ko khayai thanon set laeo khrap
When I moved here, the road was still narrow, but two years later they had finished widening it. (ordinary polite narrative, male speaker; new situation at a later past reference point)
แล้ว therefore does not encode present or past tense. It relates the asserted proposition to an earlier alternative from the standpoint chosen by the discourse.
Event completion and change of state overlap
After a dynamic event, แล้ว can simultaneously say that an event was attained and that its consequences define the current situation.
คุณแพรส่งรายงานแล้วค่ะ
khun phrae song raingan laeo kha
Khun Phrae has sent the report. (ordinary polite workplace report, female speaker; attained event with a newly relevant result)
For a bounded task, the completion reading is strong. With a pure state, a change reading is unavoidable. The following minimal contrast makes the difference clear:
ผมกินมื้อเย็นแล้วครับ
phom kin mue yen laeo khrap
I've eaten dinner. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker; eating event attained, with the current implication that food is no longer needed)
ผมอิ่มแล้วครับ
phom im laeo khrap
I'm full now. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker; change into a state, not a completed act of being full)
There is no honest rule that assigns every short predicate + แล้ว string to one sharply separate particle. Linguistic analyses differ in terminology, and natural discourse lets anteriority, completion, transition, and current relevance reinforce one another. The postverbal completion page isolates the event-focused end of this continuum; this page isolates clause-level change.
Interaction with อยู่
The order situation + อยู่แล้ว presents an ongoing situation as already established: เขานอนอยู่แล้ว “he was already sleeping,” ร้านเปิดอยู่แล้ว “the shop was already open.” แล้ว has wider scope; it does not complete the sleeping or opening state.
ตอนเราไปถึง ร้านเปิดอยู่แล้วค่ะ
ton rao pai thueng ran poet yu laeo kha
When we arrived, the shop was already open. (ordinary polite narrative, female speaker; maintained state established before arrival)
ผมทำเรื่องคืนเงินอยู่แล้วครับ ไม่ต้องส่งคำขอซ้ำ
phom tham rueang khuen ngoen yu laeo khrap mai tong song kham kho sam
I'm already processing the refund; you don't need to send the request again. (ordinary polite workplace speech, male speaker; ongoing task already established)
By contrast, เปิดแล้ว alone normally presents opening/new openness as attained. เปิดอยู่ presents the open state as holding. เปิดอยู่แล้ว says that state was already in place relative to an expectation or another event.
Do not reverse the order to เปิดแล้วอยู่ for “already open.” Aspectual อยู่ cannot be appended outside clause-final แล้ว in that intended reading. Nor should ยัง...อยู่แล้ว be stacked mechanically: ยัง and แล้ว introduce competing “still” and “already/newly relevant” presuppositions unless a specially constructed contrast licenses both.
Sentence-final แล้ว versus discourse-linking แล้ว
Clause-final aspectual แล้ว follows the proposition it scopes over. Clause-initial แล้ว can instead organize discourse as “and then / so / what about...”: แล้วคุณล่ะ “And you?” That linker does not mark the preceding event as completed simply by standing near it.
แล้วคุณจะกลับกี่โมงคะ
laeo khun cha klap ki mong kha
And what time will you return? (ordinary polite question, female speaker; clause-initial discourse linker, not change-of-state แล้ว)
Position alone is a strong clue, but punctuation in writing and intonation in speech also help identify scope.
Ordinary-polite dialogue
ตอนนี้เข้าใช้ห้องได้หรือยังคะ
ton ni khao chai hong dai rue yang kha
Can we use the room now? (ordinary polite question, female speaker)
ได้แล้วครับ ช่างซ่อมไฟเสร็จแล้ว
dai laeo khrap chang som fai set laeo
Yes, now you can. The technician has finished repairing the lights. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker; new ability followed by event completion)
งั้นไม่ต้องย้ายห้องประชุมแล้วนะคะ
ngan mai tong yai hong prachum laeo na kha
Then we don't need to move the meeting to another room. (ordinary polite response, female speaker; planned necessity withdrawn)
ครับ ใช้ห้องเดิมได้เลย
khrap chai hong doem dai loei
Right. You can use the original room. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker)
Common Mistakes
1. Translating every sentence-final แล้ว as “already”
❌ ฉันไม่หิวแล้วค่ะ แปลว่าฉันยังหิวอยู่
Incorrect interpretation—ไม่หิวแล้ว means the earlier hunger no longer holds.
✅ ฉันไม่หิวแล้วค่ะ ขอบคุณนะคะ
chan mai hio laeo kha khopkhun na kha
I'm not hungry anymore, thank you. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker)
2. Confusing “not yet” with “not anymore”
❌ รถยังไม่มาแล้วครับ
Wrong for the intended ‘the vehicle hasn't arrived yet’; ยังไม่ and clause-final แล้ว impose conflicting default perspectives.
✅ รถรับส่งยังไม่มาครับ รออีกสักครู่นะครับ
rot rap song yang mai ma khrap ro ik sak khru na khrap
The shuttle hasn't arrived yet; please wait a moment. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker)
3. Putting aspectual อยู่ outside clause-final แล้ว
❌ ประตูเปิดแล้วอยู่ค่ะ
Incorrect for ‘the door is already open’; the maintained state must precede wider-scope แล้ว.
✅ ประตูเปิดอยู่แล้วค่ะ ไม่ต้องใช้กุญแจ
pratu poet yu laeo kha mai tong chai kunchae
The door is already open; you don't need a key. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker)
4. Treating แล้ว as grammatical past
❌ แล้วใช้พูดถึงอดีตเท่านั้นครับ
Incorrect claim—แล้ว can describe a changed state at a projected future reference point.
✅ พรุ่งนี้เวลานี้คงมืดแล้วครับ
phrung ni wela ni khong muet laeo khrap
By this time tomorrow, it will probably be dark. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker; future reference)
Key Takeaways
- Clause-final แล้ว presents the whole proposition as newly or already true relative to an earlier state or expectation.
- Positive P แล้ว commonly marks entry into P; ไม่ P แล้ว means that P no longer holds.
- ยังไม่ P “not yet P” and ไม่ P แล้ว “not P anymore” point in opposite temporal directions.
- The reference point can be present, past, or projected; แล้ว is not a tense ending.
- Event attainment and clause-level change overlap, while P อยู่แล้ว says that a continuing situation was already established.
