Standard Thai does not require a verb to be inflected for grammatical tense. ส่ง remains ส่ง in a past report, a present routine, and a future plan. That does not mean Thai is vague about time: speakers establish a reference time with expressions such as เมื่อวาน, ตอนนี้, and พรุ่งนี้, inherit it from discourse, and use aspect or modality to show how an event is viewed within that time.
The practical lesson is more precise than “Thai has no tenses.” Time expressions can be omitted when the conversation already supplies an anchor, but กำลัง, อยู่, แล้ว, เคย, and จะ contribute viewpoint, experience, completion/change, or prospect. They are not interchangeable tense endings.
One unchanged predicate, several time references
Compare the same predicate ส่งเอกสาร “send documents” in four settings:
| Frame | Natural model | Source of time/viewpoint |
|---|---|---|
| earlier event | เมื่อวานเขาส่งเอกสาร | เมื่อวาน anchors the bare predicate in the past |
| ongoing at an earlier reference | ตอนนั้นเขากำลังส่งเอกสารอยู่ | ตอนนั้น is past; กำลัง...อยู่ gives an internal view |
| completed/currently relevant | เขาส่งเอกสารแล้ว | แล้ว presents an attained event or changed situation |
| later schedule | พรุ่งนี้เขาส่งเอกสาร | พรุ่งนี้ supplies future reference without obligatory จะ |
| prospective commitment | เขาจะส่งเอกสาร | จะ presents the event as prospective/intended |
เมื่อวานเขาส่งเอกสารฉบับแก้ไขค่ะ
muea wan khao song ekkasan chabap kaekhai kha
Yesterday he sent the revised document. (ordinary polite workplace report, female speaker)
ตอนนั้นเขากำลังส่งเอกสารอยู่ครับ ระบบจึงช้ามาก
ton nan khao kamlang song ekkasan yu khrap rabop chueng cha mak
At that time he was sending the documents, so the system was very slow. (ordinary polite workplace report, male speaker)
พรุ่งนี้เขาส่งเอกสารรอบสุดท้ายค่ะ
phrung ni khao song ekkasan rop sutthai kha
Tomorrow he's sending the final set of documents. (ordinary polite workplace speech, female speaker; scheduled future from the adverb)
English forces sent, is sending, or will send in these clauses. Thai retains ส่ง and distributes temporal work across the clause. A translation tense is an English choice, not proof of a matching Thai tense morpheme.
Discourse can carry the anchor
A time expression need not recur in every sentence. Once เมื่อวาน has established yesterday, following bare predicates are normally interpreted inside that frame until the conversation shifts it. This is structured omission, not guesswork.
เมื่อวานคุณไปไหนมาคะ
muea wan khun pai nai ma kha
Where did you go yesterday? (ordinary polite question, female speaker)
ผมไปพบหมอ แล้วแวะซื้อยาครับ
phom pai phop mo laeo wae sue ya khrap
I went to see the doctor and then stopped to buy medicine. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker; both events inherit yesterday)
The reply contains no past form. แล้ว between the events organizes their sequence; it does not independently conjugate both verbs. The question has supplied the temporal domain.
Speakers reset the anchor explicitly when necessary: เมื่อวาน... แต่พรุ่งนี้.... Without such a reset, listeners normally preserve the active reference time.
เมื่อก่อนฉันทำงานที่บ้าน แต่ปีหน้าจะเข้าออฟฟิศทุกวันค่ะ
muea kon chan tham ngan thi ban tae pi na cha khao offit thuk wan kha
I used to work at home, but next year I'll go into the office every day. (ordinary polite workplace speech, female speaker)
The dedicated temporal-adverb page explains how deictic and calendar expressions establish these shifts.
Aspect is viewpoint, not calendar location
กำลัง before an event and aspectual อยู่ after it present an activity or situation from inside its development. That viewpoint can be anchored now, earlier, or in an imagined later scene.
ตอนนี้ช่างกำลังตรวจเครื่องอยู่ครับ
ton ni chang kamlang truat khrueang yu khrap
The technician is inspecting the machine now. (ordinary polite report, male speaker)
เมื่อฉันโทรไป ช่างยังตรวจเครื่องอยู่ค่ะ
muea chan tho pai chang yang truat khrueang yu kha
When I called, the technician was still inspecting the machine. (ordinary polite report, female speaker; past reference with อยู่)
The second sentence proves that อยู่ is not “present tense.” It presents continuity relative to the past reference established by เมื่อฉันโทรไป.
Aspect also interacts with event type. Activities such as อ่าน, ทำงาน, and ตรวจเครื่อง have an internal duration and readily take กำลัง...อยู่. A stable state such as factual รู้คำตอบ does not normally become กำลังรู้คำตอบ merely because English says “currently know.” Dynamic predicates and context can change compatibility: กำลังเข้าใจมากขึ้น presents a developing understanding, not static possession of a fact.
ตอนนี้ผมรู้คำตอบที่ถูกต้องแล้วครับ
ton ni phom ru kham top thi thuktong laeo khrap
Now I know the correct answer. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker; attained state, not a progressive)
แล้ว: completion or change, not “past”
Postverbal or clause-final แล้ว presents an event, result, or state as attained relative to a reference point. That often supports an English past or perfect translation, but it also occurs with present change and in prospective sequences.
ฝนหยุดแล้วค่ะ ออกไปข้างนอกได้
fon yut laeo kha ok pai khang nok dai
The rain has stopped; we can go outside. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker; current change)
พอส่งรายงานแล้ว ผมจะโทรหาคุณครับ
pho song raingan laeo phom cha tho ha khun khrap
Once I've sent the report, I'll call you. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker; completion lies in the future sequence)
The second แล้ว cannot be “past tense”: the completed sending is expected before another future event. The marker orders stages relative to each other.
อยู่แล้ว deserves special care. In ผมรู้อยู่แล้ว, the combination means the knowledge was already in place, not that knowing is progressively unfolding. Interpret the whole construction rather than adding dictionary glosses mechanically.
ฉันรู้อยู่แล้วว่าร้านหยุดวันจันทร์ค่ะ
chan ru yu laeo wa ran yut wan chan kha
I already know that the shop is closed on Mondays. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker; pre-existing knowledge)
จะ: prospect, intention, and expectation
จะ places a situation in a prospective domain and often expresses intention, prediction, or expectation. A future time phrase can make จะ unnecessary for a firm schedule. Conversely, จะ can occur in a past context for an intention that was pending then: ตอนนั้นผมจะกลับบ้าน “At that point I was going/intending to go home.” It is therefore not a one-to-one future tense.
ตอนนั้นผมจะกลับแล้ว แต่หัวหน้าโทรมาครับ
ton nan phom cha klap laeo tae hua na tho ma khrap
I was about to leave then, but the supervisor called. (ordinary polite workplace speech, male speaker)
Negation follows Thai scope
Plain ไม่ precedes the predicate it negates: ไม่ไป, ไม่ทำงาน. In a prospective frame, จะไม่ไป means the projected event is non-going. Thai does not insert an auxiliary equivalent to English do.
พรุ่งนี้ฉันจะไม่เข้าประชุมค่ะ เพราะมีนัดหมอ
phrung ni chan cha mai khao prachum kha phro mi nat mo
Tomorrow I won't attend the meeting because I have a doctor's appointment. (ordinary polite workplace speech, female speaker)
Ordinary-polite dialogue
ตอนที่ฉันโทรไป คุณกำลังขับรถอยู่หรือเปล่าคะ
ton thi chan tho pai khun kamlang khap rot yu rue plao kha
When I called, were you driving? (ordinary polite question, female speaker)
ใช่ครับ ผมเลยไม่ได้รับสาย
chai khrap phom loei mai dai rap sai
Yes. That's why I didn't answer. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker)
แล้วพรุ่งนี้คุณเข้าออฟฟิศกี่โมงคะ
laeo phrung ni khun khao offit ki mong kha
And what time are you going into the office tomorrow? (ordinary polite question, female speaker)
ประมาณเก้าโมงครับ มีประชุมตอนสิบโมง
praman kao mong khrap mi prachum ton sip mong
Around nine. There's a meeting at ten. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker; bare clauses inherit tomorrow)
Common Mistakes
1. Adding เป็น as an English-style past auxiliary
❌ เมื่อวานฉันเป็นส่งเอกสารทางไปรษณีย์ค่ะ
Incorrect—เป็น does not translate English ‘was/did’ before an action predicate.
✅ เมื่อวานฉันส่งเอกสารทางไปรษณีย์ค่ะ
muea wan chan song ekkasan thang praisani kha
Yesterday I sent the documents by post. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker)
2. Requiring แล้ว in every past report
❌ เมื่อวานผมแล้วพบลูกค้าครับ
Incorrect position and analysis—เมื่อวาน already anchors the event in the past.
✅ เมื่อวานผมพบลูกค้าที่สำนักงานใหญ่ครับ
muea wan phom phop luk kha thi samnakngan yai khrap
Yesterday I met the customer at the head office. (ordinary polite workplace speech, male speaker)
3. Treating จะ as obligatory future tense
❌ พรุ่งนี้จะฉันหยุดงานค่ะ
Incorrect order; จะ precedes the predicate, and the calendar anchor can also stand without it.
✅ พรุ่งนี้ฉันหยุดงานค่ะ
phrung ni chan yut ngan kha
I'm off work tomorrow. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker; scheduled future from พรุ่งนี้)
4. Forcing a stable state into the progressive
❌ ตอนนี้ผมกำลังรู้ที่อยู่เขาอยู่ครับ
Incorrect for stable factual knowledge; กำลัง...อยู่ presents an unfolding event.
✅ ตอนนี้ผมรู้ที่อยู่เขาแล้วครับ
ton ni phom ru thi yu khao laeo khrap
Now I know his address. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker; change into a knowledge state)
5. Moving plain negation after the predicate
❌ พรุ่งนี้พวกเราไปสำนักงานไม่ค่ะ
Incorrect neutral negation—ไม่ precedes ไป.
✅ พรุ่งนี้พวกเราไม่ไปสำนักงานค่ะ
phrung ni phuak rao mai pai samnakngan kha
Tomorrow we aren't going to the office. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker)
Key Takeaways
- Thai predicates do not inflect for grammatical tense, but clauses locate time precisely through adverbs, discourse, aspect, and modality.
- A reference time can be inherited across several clauses and omitted until the discourse shifts.
- กำลัง...อยู่ gives an internal viewpoint; แล้ว presents attainment or change; จะ presents prospect or intention. None maps to one English tense.
- Event type and scope determine which markers are natural and where they appear.
